Hello Guys,

I need your help. My 96 Tacoma SR5 V6 4x4 runs weird and I tried to drain and fill. Also I need to replace the Transmission Filter Kit but my Toyota dealer told me they don't sell/have the Transmission Filter Kit for the 95.5 - 97. All I need to do just clean it and then put it back on, but the Ceal/Filter Gasket is bad now. Is that true? How can I clean it? Where can I get both the Filter Gasket (strainer) and the Transmission Oil Pan Gasket?

There's a metal screen that can be cleaned and reinstalled. That's the only soft of filter in it. You should seal your trans pan back up with FIPG like Toyota intended. Don't try to use some kind of cork gasket.

Clean the filter with brake clean, let dry and put back on. I used grey rtv to seal my trans pan on my T100. No leaks. DO NOT OVERDO IT on the gasket maker. Too much and it wont dry right.

Thank you for your advices and subjections. It was lucky and I got the Transmission Filter Kit, a complete set for $26.99 + tax, from NAPA yesterday afternoon. I already put everything back on to the truck last night and I drive it to work this morning but it runs weird because it needs more fluid. I'll head to the dealer to get two more bottles of fluid at lunch time.

You know what, the guy at the dealer told me on the other day, that I just need only two and a half quarts/bottles but it needs more than that. I make sure the fluid after I finished putting everything last night and it only is more than/pass half. I guess I need at least one and a half more fluid of bottle.

The Toyota Dealer in Hickory, NC sells $13.99/quart or bottle of the Transmission Fluid for me. How much does it cost in your area? I bought 6 quarts x $13.99 + tax. Gosh, it's so expensive.

Why buy transmission fluid at the dealer?? The synthetic I use doesn't cost that much per quart.

I just use cheap Dex III.

A drain and fill is usually considered about 4 quarts, so you'll need at least that much.

I just bought two more quarts from the dealer. As I make sure it with the cold, it should be good for 4 and 1/2 quarts.

I did some research online and I found some people said the ones at the auto are not so good, that's why I get the ones at the dealer.


How's your truck running with the ones at the auto parts?

Dealer fluids are relabeled by another company. Do you think Toyota makes their own oil? They are in business to sell cars not make them last forever.

I just used Dexron from Advance Auto, and did the drain & refill.

But, if dealer fluids give you peace of mind, go fer it !

I prefer OEM hard parts in most cases , so I can see fluids as being a logical extension of that, even if I do not do that myself.
