While looking into options of upgrading my '02 4Runner auto in preparation to supercharge. I ran across a "transmission reprogramming kit" from Trango. They offer two different kits for the 340 transmission. There isn't much information on the internet regarding the kit. I'm wondering if anyone else has looked into this as an option to sending the valve body out.

I just got off the phone with thier product support person. He said that this kit definetly covers the A340F transmission and not only replaces the accumulator springs but increases line pressure. Through a distributor this kit is $108.72. Very cheap, just curious how the shifts are? Anyone use one of these? I'm ready to buy one and try it.

What those kits do is firm up your shifts. Increasing line pressure reduces the amount of time the clutch pack takes to engage, hence applies the piston quicker. Theoretically the result should be less wear on the clutch packs and less heat due to friction reduction. Downside is there may be some components in the trans that will take more of a beating from higher line pressure; thrust washers, planetaries, etc.

This looks like a Stage 1 kit so I would say go for it, you'll be happy with the trans performance.

So, it all sounds good, I'm just curious if anyone has used this kit?

I havn't used the kit in the 340F but I've done a few in Chevy 400, Ford FMX and C6 transmissions. It's very simple just be very carefull to keep things organized and clean. Valve bodies are extremely sensitive. A thread from a cloth can possibly be a dissaster.

Sensei explained the kit's operation very well. It takes the grandma shift out. Worth every penny.

When you take the pan off there may be some residual clutch meterial on the magnets, this is normal.

I'd also really stress the install of an external cooler like the B&M 70264. If you're not familiar with these radiators they are famous for pink milkshake.

This is interesting, I have been looking for something like this for a while. Is this different than shimming the valve body, or is shimming just a cheaper option?

If you're talking about shimming the valves then yes, it's differrent. Shimming valves requires much more work such as spring tension, orifice sizes, valve sizing, etc. The method discussed in this thread is a low buck option with quality results.

Follow the link in the first post to the manufacturers website. This kit includes new springs, no shims. I appears to be quality. I'm going to buy one and try it. For $109 it's hard to pass up.

These are most likely springs from another Toyota A340 sold at nice markup. The springs in my Lexus LS400 A341E were a bit longer and stiffer than the springs in my 4Runner A340F.
