Transfer case woes: 99 4Runner

Scouting mission tonight, got stuck was giving it some gas in 4x4, felt a thud kind of thing. like if you were disengaging 4x4 under a little too much load

Thats when the 4x4 stopped working.

its the x-fer case, front ADD stuff engages and is fine.

in the parking lot 4 hi and low don't work and don't grind. the push button (99 limited) makes a grinding sound.

I changed the output shaft seal maybe i didn't torque the nut on that enough?

any ideas?

Sorry for being short, one handed typing due to broken finger. If I cant ride my bike, OR 4x4 for a month im gonna go crazy

ok, in 2wd everything is fine, no noise.

when i use the pushbutton 4x4 (no locked center) the output spins, and makes a grinding sound. in 4hi, the output spins, and makes no sound....... but doesnt work under load i have to assume as it wasnt spinning when i got stuck...

it all actutes fine, and the lights all turn solid on the dash. really hoping to get a good diagnosis before i drop the case as then my truck will be out for at least a week.

More diagnosing.

only grinds when shifting into AWD (push button on 99 limited)

The output shaft spins in all modes after it has shifted in. Once spinning, the case doesn't make any funny noises.

I think it has to do with the electric motor on the back of the case. Does that come off? How?

I took off all the bolts to it, and it wouldn't come off even with a moderate amount of prying.

Looking at the fsm.. it looks like the actuator is the culprit.

i doubrt i can fix it without dropping the case.. And thewn I probably might as well buy a new one and be done.

crap
