Tranny Trouble

I go out to the 4Runner today to go into town, put the truck into reverse and nothing (hmmm I says to myself) try drive (OK there) try reverse (nope) try neutral (goes forward on it's own - no hill) give her a little bite - definatly in gear but no reverse) Check fluid, it's OK. Check linkage - set correctly. So I push the truck out of the driveway and take it to a tranny shop - diagnosis - Shot. Spent the rest of the day tracking down a tranny $550 for the tranny 101 day warrenty(used tranny from a wreckers) and almost 550 more to have it installed... POS A340H

Well a few days and $1200 Cdn and it's now fixed.... I was informed that heat was the cause, so I had a tranny cooler installed in line with the factory one.... Now the question is why didn't the A/T Temp light come on?

I can't say why the light didn't come on, but make sure to change the fluid on a regular basis (like a drain and fill every 35-40k KM) and you will extend the life of your tranny much farther than otherwise. Glad to hear you already put in a cooler which will also add miles to the new drivetrain's life.

Did they try to pull a code first. It could have been as simple as replacing the lockup solenoid or a PNP switch. If you had been having trouble with it then it may have physically failed but if it went all of a sudden i would suspect electrical failure first. Easier and much cheaper to replace a solenoid or switch rather that R&R ing a tranny. Could even be the TPS.
