Tranny prob

I have a question about my 4-speed tranny. In order for me to go in reverse, I have to hold the shifter in reverse and go real slow, or itll pop out and bang gears. Whats going on with it?

is this a manual? if so maybe the shift lever seat

Roadtrpr is correct. That's probably it - either the seat or the piece at the tip of the shifter. Otherwise the answer would lie in in worn out shift forks etc, which is fairly unlikely. Pull your shift lever out, it's easy, and see if either or both of the plastic parts need replaced.

I *think* those were different - the newer ones you just unbolt four bolts and lift the whole seat assembly and shifter out, or you can 1/4 turn twist just the retainer out and lift the lever out of the bushing either way, but I think the old four speeds had some kind of clip dealie you undo and lift out the lever. Too many years have gone by... or too many beers.

dang it..the little plastic thing on the end of the shifter was in good condition, and I replaced the seat but it's still not working right

You might want to call Marlin and ask him. Seems to me that there is a common problem with the old L-series trannies bending shift forks. Sounds like this may be what happened to you.

any other ideas?

would a 5 speed bolt up to my BH? or would I have to get another L45?

L series trannies have an integral bellhousing so no. But, you can bolt up a L52 trans to your engine quite easily or a G52 or W56 with a little bit more work.

L52 is a 5-speed that was offered from '81-'83.
FWIW, thats what the first digit in the tranny model number refers to at least on L,G and W series trannies. Not sure what the "1" on a R150F refers to, but again the "5" designates a 5-speed.

just because I don't know ˟˟˟˟, ON my 76 cj-5 I was having simmular problems, I rebuilt the tranny and that included new syncro gears. I don't remember if reverse has syncro gears (the soft brass gears between the hard steal gears) but maybe someone with a clue could respond if these gears might be your problem????
