TPS and timing problems...?

I recently purchased a 4runner about 3 months ago and noticed that it is way underpowered. The truck won't rev past 4 grand and the timng is maxed out. The truck runs alright between 0-3500 but does lack a lot of power in that range. I know these 3.0 are slow and I don't expect much but it is a five speed and will not climb an incline in 5th gear. Could my timing belt be off? The thing does not like reving to 4 grand and am 100% sure 5 grand is physically impossible for it. I did mess with the timing and hooked the light up to it and put it at 10 but it lost even more power. I maxed it out like it was before and it runs better compared to 10, I think it would run even better if I could turn it some more. I did turn the motor to tdc on #1 and the rotor was pointing right at #1 on the cap, so I'm pretty sure it's not a tooth off.

Also I was cleaning out the tb and figured out that I should of taken off the TPS first. Now my truck like to idle every once in awhile at 2 grand. I ordered a used one off ebay and took my old one off only to notice that the new one was different. I put the old one back on and it was surging so bad I couldn't even drive it. I ended up taking the TPS off and it is now driveable. Why do I need a TPS and am I screwing anything up by driving with it off?

Any help on the subjects would be appreciated, thanks.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Have you checked your truck for codes? Might help. Your TPS is the Trottle Position Sensor and tells the ECU how far open the throttle is. You do need it. They are adjustable, so is yours adjusted proberly? Are you getting any pinging with your timing maxed out? (maxed out is 15, right?)

I dunno. Just some observation based on my limited understanding of car mechanics.

Have fun.
