I am just wondering what the towing capacity of my rig is. Its a 90 4runner with a 22re, 5speed and the original tires were 225/75/15 if that has any thing to do with it. I tried looking it up online but no luck. If anyone tows with a similar truck i would like to hear from them, how it performs and how much was towed. Even manufacturer specs are fine.

I believe my owners manual in my 1987 22r truck says the towning capacity is 3500 pounds, but I have not towed much with it. Probably the heaviest thing I have towed was an old yamaha G1 golf cart on an old wooden trailer (probably about 1500 pounds total). I definitely knew it was back there, but it seemed to tow it just fine.

The 3.0 V6 is rated at 3,500lbs. I don't believe the 22R can't be the same. My owner's manual doesn't say what it should be though...

I wouldn't take on anything bigger than about 2,000 lbs with a 22RE if going over a large distance at highway speeds. Around town you can tow 3,500lbs and be alright. I towed a trailer that weighed I'd guess in the neighborhood of 1,500 lbs or less through some mountain highway, and I would be unable to go over about 50 in a 70mph zone in an 87 22RE.

i dont know the actual specs but you also might want to find out some info on trailer brakes too.

I've got an '86 1-ton, and I've towed quite a bit with it. 2,000 lbs and it's like it's not even there. 4,000 lbs and I've got some trouble in the mountains. I'll be in third gear with the flashers on doing about 30 mph up a mountain that way. It's ok on the flats pulling that load.

Maximum capacity? Dunno. The highest crazy load I ever hauled was somewhere around 10,000-15,000 lbs. It was, um, interesting. Maximum "safe" speed of about 25 mph. About 10 seconds of clutch slipping to get it moving. It was an experience I don't care to repeat. The truck did live though.

I got an 89 4x4 22re and go camping a few times a year with full bed and loaded down 4x8 trailer with 2 dirtbikes through the mountains. can run 65 bout the whole time fairly easy but on a good incline it slugs down pretty good. usually running 4000 rpm uphill. the guy i bought it from used to haul about a 16-20ft boat with it when it was stock. I've put all the mods on it except for the tires and wheels and don't know how it would do with all that stuff if it was stock.

Just to clarify, the 3.0 V6 2wd with auto tranny is rated for 5000lbs. The 3.0 V6 4wd with auto tranny is rated slightly less.

I do seem to vaguely recall the 5speed V6s are less and 3500lb sounds right, but I'm not sure.

The 2.4L is rated for 3,500lbs and I believe that is with both trannies.

3,500 is what my owner's manual says. I towed 2200lbs with another 400lbs in the back of the Runner during the first part of October. I covered about 1k miles most of which was flat for the most part with one slight grade. The flat stuff was had in 5th gear at 70-75mph, the slight grade took 4th @ 60-65mph. It was definately felt, but once up to speed it wasn't too bad. Mileage was about the same at 18-19mpg. This was the biggest load with the 4-R, normally I haul a small 5x8 trailer with two bikes, around 1300-1400lbs with no problems.

Rgardless of the rating in the manual, I would suggest it sort of depends on what you intend to tow and where. For example, I used to tow a utility trailer with my car and would sometimes move dirt or crushed rock with it. It was too heavy for the car and I would keep the speed down to about 40 mph and only go a few miles. I wouldn't want to head accross country or have to go up or down any major hills.

I pull a 14 aluminum boat behind my 95 3.0 Runner and it has not been a problem. You would hardly know it was there. It affects the fuel mileage however. I don't know what it weighs but I would guess the total is less than 1,000 pounds.

Ok my 1990 owners manuel pg. 121 says

1. trailer not to exceed 3500lbs
2. if over 2000 you need a sway control device
3. the gross combination of not more than on the truck and trailer and contents:
-7700 on a 2x4
-8100 on a 4x4

trailer tongue can hold 350 lbs
and thats about it .... No v6 vs 22re info

at 107,000 I had towed a 16 foot trailer loaded to 2500lbs with my 94 22re pickup from San Jose to LA and I could smell the clutch when going up the grapevine but I made it none the less.

Did the same trip at 119,000 towing all of the fiances cra#(i.e. Stuff) back and was forced to replace the clutch as it started to slip ::cry: But still made it. Yota = dependability

Hmm interesting, my manual says the same. I know I read 5000lbs from a toyota publication and I think it was the brochure when it was new. I'll have to do some more research.

It looks like you have plenty of information, but I have a copy of the towing section from my pickup manual. It is a 1987 and has a 22r carbureted engine.
