Hi, I just bought my 4Runner this weekend. Woohoo. Havn't driven it much yet, but it needs new tires soon. I dont want stock size tires cuz it looks too wussy, so what size should or can I put on. I think it has 31.5" Firestones on right now. I want a nice quiet comfortable ride as well as the agressive look, so which tires would fit my need? Thanks.

are you sure it has 15 inch rims? i was under the impression that the 3rd gen. runners came with 16 inch rims...if not...my apologies

I'd get whatever size tires it has on now, the previous owner probably had them on for a reason. He may have regeared or those could be stock sizes.

Mine came stock with 15" steel rims, but also with 225's haha. Now I have 16" alloys with 265/75's

JMT I highly reccommend the bfg a/t's if you wanna spend a little extra, but I believe it's well worth it.

That might help you out. Just found out that with the 15's, 225 is actually stock size, so the tires you have on now are definitly not stock size.

they came with both. it depends on what your options chosen were. Mine came with 16x7 wheels and 265/70r16 goodywear wrangler rts tires.

I'm sure these are NOT stock tires. I was just saying that I don't want to go back to stock ones. I like how these look, but would other tires give me a better ride and milage? What is something that is a good balance of looks, comfort, and mileage? Here are some pics. Thanks

They look pretty stock to me, dude. You can go whatever 1 step lower is and get some mileage and acceleration....


N/M you said tires not wheels. Get 265/70 tires if you want slightly better road useage.

im pretty sure if you have 15 inch rims you can go as big as 31x10.5x15 with out a lift , and there are a lot of aggressive tread out there that have low road noise,
i love my wild country txr's from les schwebs, but you dont have them down in socal.

if you wanna save your gas milage too then going with 31's wont do the trick. but ill tell you what they will look good .

Mines came stock with 225 x 15's. I dumped the steelies for special order 15" alloys. Just this past weekend, I went to Costco and put on 31 x 10.5 Michelins ATX. They fill the wells nicely, ride smooth and look great with the big smooth sidewalls. Had the 60 buck discount cupon too. I hate leaving my truck at any shop after bad rim/caliper damage by some tire monkeys. Luckily, the tire dude there was kool. I told him I'm anal about rim damage and my painted calipers. He said, no problem, he'd personally do the job and take extra care not to damage anything. I was so stoked to see not a speck of damage. I went to give him a tip, but he was out to lunch. I was driving out and saw him walking, eating from his McDonalds bag. I stopped and tried to give him the tip, he said their not allowed, oh well. As we drove off my wife and I looked at each other and laughed...our truck smelled like fries. I guess they do a road test after installing a new set...I did'nt mind really...my baby usually smells like Whoppers. :pig:

My rig came with the 15" alloys as well, and 225s. I upgraded to 32/11.5-15s when I lifted the truck, but you won't be able to fit 32s - 31s are as big as you can go (safely) without a lift. I have Bridgestone Dueler ATs that I love, but they are louder than the firestones I had on previously. A lot of people also like the BFG ATs, but I suspect you'll also hear a bit more noise from them. I also think BFGs are overrated, but that's just my opinion. One tire that I've read good things about is the Cooper Discoverer ST. I don't know anyone that's every tried them, but they have a rather aggressive sidewall, and are supposed to be a great compromise between and off-road mud tire and an all-season highway tire. Here is a review, fwiw.

I had 265/75r16 (31.65x10.43) bfg a/t's on mine for over 60k with no lift and no problems and never once rubbed or seemed unsafe. So I would say you could fit 32x10.5's on there, safely. but again, you are looking for gas mileage and a good ride. don't get the mudders.

I was under the impression that, while they basically measure the same width, the 16" tires will actually be narrower than the 15" tires. The 15s will "mushroom" more under the weight of the rig. Does that make any sense?
