Tire\Wheel Info for 4th Gens
Things are finally starting to come together ! Yesterday, after months of dealing with the OEM equipment, I finally got new wheels and tires on my 2003 Runner. In a nutshell, I'm a very happy camper... But it didn't come without a bit of pain in the process. Here are some things I learned:
1. First, the factory wheels do NOT have a 0 offset. It's something closer to a +30 mill. offset. This is important info if you will be putting larger/wider tires on your Runner since the factory rims will most likely not work due to their close proximity to the front suspension. I have a 0 offset wheel and now have plenty of room.
2. Second, you will NOT be able to go larger than a 265\70R17 tire (32", or a 265\75R16 if you go with 16" rims) without a LOT of rubbing. I have a 2" prototype lift and am still experiencing rubbing against my front mudflaps. Of course, taking those mudflaps off would correct the problem, but leave me with a funny-looking truck.
3. Simply finding a wheel with a 6x5.5 or 6x139.5 lug pattern will NOT work, either. You will need to go the extra step and find a non-hub centric wheel (this may not be a big surprise to you dedicated Toyota owners). Personally, this added a significant amount of frustration since I was trying to stick with a 17" wheel, and the non-hub centric selections are VERY limited.
OK, enough of the lessons. here are some pix !
I've got 17x8 AR Diamondbacks wearing 265\70R17 BFG All-Terrain T/As. These netted me another 1/2" of ground clearance, too ! (now 10.25" at the skidplate).
Hope this helps someone avoid the steep learning curve I went through this week.

How about sharing some info on that lift. I hear Revtek has one in the works.

So you ended up with 265/70x17. Was there any rubbing with the stock set-up before the lift? Looks great! Did you upsize your spare? I notice you have the V8 and fulltime 4x4.

Sac,
The only thing rubbing before or after the lift was installed was my skidplate against the rocks I was driving over.
Good question on the spare. I did not upsize my spare. It is still the factory rim with the OEM tire (265\65R17). I'm not sure how this set up will work if I get a flat, but figure it should be good enough to get me back to civilization if I do. Theoretically, it should work since all of the differentials are open. So I shouldn't damage anything. However, the VSC may throw fits since one tire is rotating at a different velocity than all the others. Maybe if the temps get below 110 one of these days, I'll go swap things around and see how she does...

Lefty, I have to commend you, that 4th looks Sweet!!!
I have just ordered Allied Wheels 17x9 sim beadlocks and am going to run GY Wrangler 265-70-17's.Do you think that'll be a problem?? I hope not, but if so, I should be able to get by with the stock wheels until the 2" daystar lift comes out, ya think??
Anywho, your runner is friggin' awesome. Are you happy with the offroad capability of it so far? I know I am, Toyota has pretty much solidified me as a lifetime customer with this rig, not that I wasn't before, but they've done themselves a good thing with the new Runner, IMHO.
Pics comin' tomm.
Later,
Doug

'02,
Thanks for the compliments !
The intention of this thread was to help members, just like you, get through the decision\planning process. As stated above, the 265\70R17's will fit but you will most likely have some rubbing. The amount of rubbing will depend upon your wheel's offset. Anything close to a 0 offset, will cause rubbing on your mudflap during turns (especially with those MT\R's !). Now you could probably get around that problem by simply taking the front mudflaps off, and gain yourself the necessary clearance to stop the rubbing.
Offroad ? You bet ! Easily the best vehicle I have driven off-road. Watch that ground clearance tho ! (probably it's worst short-coming).
Good luck with your tires\wheels ! Be sure to post some pix when you get them !

Lefty:
Those AR Diamondbacks, are they series 617? Did you buy local or web? I notice you de-badged the side monikers. Did you use a blow dryer, dental floss and denatured alcohol? Thanks

With the rebates, % rate, aggressive negotiating, and a willingness to sell, I came out ahead from trading my '02 Sport for an '03 Sport. I paid about $200 less for the '03 than I did for the '02!??! And I now have a V8, etc. Two years and 36K miles on the '02 for what I paid was an added bonus.

Thanks Lefty! I think I may have an offset of +12mm on the ones I ordered, infact they may only be 17x8 instaed of x9. I was uncertain and let the Allied distributor near me figure out the offset and width.
Edge, I did lose a little on the trade because I had over 31,000 miles after only 12 mos of having it. I saved myself somewhat because I had bought a 1998 BMW 740il with 60k on it (which I was making payments on) from a friend and also ditched that at the same time. All of the trading and owing and owning it turned out that I made out about a couple of $grand$ ahead on the enitire swap and only have one vehicle payment now and a new Runner with low miles, V-8 and a sunroof. I'm still waiting on the rubberized PVC flooring though.
Also like Sac State said, aggressive marketing let me buy my 03 for 31,080. The sticker that suggested MSRP was like 36,800. Interest rate was also an added bonus. I used Edmunds for a good True Market Value on a new Runner.

Jim,
With the 2" lift and 0 offset, I AM rubbing on my mudflaps. In fact, I did about 20 miles of driving yesterday and checking my mudflaps this morning, I found quite a bit of rubbing. I took the front mudflaps off to check for clearance and don't have ANY rubbing without them.
So to summarize. A 2" lift, 0 offset wheel, 265/70R17s, and NO front mudflaps, and I have NO rubbing.
Sac,
Got the tires and wheels through my local Discount Tire store. They deal with a lot of AR wheels, so it wasn't a big deal with them. And since I was getting tires also, they gave me a pretty good deal.
Just be sure to look for those non-hub centric wheels. while I'm happy with the results, these weren't the first wheels on my list !
The tires on the other hand, were a no-brainer...

If you guys have gone offroading in your new 03 4runner, you will rub w/ stock tires...
If you air down enough, it'll rub on the mudflaps!
Also another thing that I noticed is that when you full lock turn either right or left, if you turn onto a slight incline, the stock tires will rub the mudflaps as well.
But this only applies to the 16" wheel owners because I have the 16" wheels.
If you guys are planning to buy some wheels, make sure you have enough backspacing for your wheels. You have to make sure that the brake calipers clear or else it won't fit. I would recomment purchasing 1 first to test ffit it. All tire companies will do with for ya. This ensures no messups and also better for both parties. After that you can buy the other 3/4 at the proper prices as discussed!

I haven't taken mine off roading, unless you count really crumy country dirt roads... But, I often turn the wheel to the stops and hop good size speed bumps... No rubbing, I have the 17's FWIW.
