I've got the classic New Toy delimma, and after searching old posts, I still haven't made up my mind. I just bought a 93 4cyl, 5 speed 4wd pickup. It has a worn out set of 30x9.5's on the stock 15" steel wheels, and they are on their last legs. I'm deciding between the BFG ATko's and the Yokohama AT's, and of course I'm trying to decide whether to stick with the 30x9.5 or go to a 31x10.5. My main question is has anyone had any contact patch problems with a 10.5 width tire on the stock wheels? Any other opinions or tips to help would be appreciated too.

Dude, go with the 31x10.50 or you will wish that you did. What kind of driving do you do? What kind of terrain? Your gas mileage might change, too.

You gain .5 " of ground clearance and the big tire look.
You lose a little power and some mpg.
I just bumped a tire size and am pretty happy with the result.

31x105s will be fine, probably wont notice too much drop in mileage....

Rotate the 31's often. The 15" steelies are 6" wide and you may get some odd wear out of them.

even though my current tires have quite a bit of tread left, I really wanna go to 32's soon, so I've been thinking on those two myself and possibly the bfg mt..

I don't like the sidewall tread as much on the yoko's, but they're a lot cheaper and I'm sure they're a lot less likely to hydroplane in the rain (and we get enough of it here). The bfg at's look a lot tougher though, and prolly are offroad I'd guess. Hard decision.

I'd definitely go with 31's if I were you, they'll look a lot better.

Ya go with the 31X10.50

I am running 31X10.50 Bajw Claws and am very happy with them.
You also can't go worng with the BFGs!

Of course I'd like to go with the 31's, but my delimma is whether .5" of ground clearance and better looks is worth the accelleration and mpg drop, and if I'll be sacrificing lots in the handling and tire wear departments by running a 10.5 on a 6" wide rim.
I guess I'm paranoid b/c I went with a 285/75/16 Interco TrXus (about 33") on my Isuzu Trooper, and while I LOVED the tires for Offroading and for Looks, the handling, acceleration, highway cruising, and MPG Sucked!
I have had people tell me that the Intercos are a heavy tire, even in that size and they seemed pretty indestructable and Very Grippy offroad, but I just didn't get offroad enough to justify that size tire on my daily driver.
Anyway, I like to be able to play in the dirt, rocks, and mud, and to get where I want to go when camping, Mountain biking, Hiking, etc., even if I don't do it on a weekly basis. Most of my miles will still be on asphalt.
I have heard people rave about both the BFG's and the Yoks, not much bad about either.
I guess I'm leaning to the 31's, It's just in my nature, I'm just trying to make myself feel better about it.

For me, the differences between the 30-9.50 and the 31-10.50 are worth the acceleration and potential mileage drop, but that is for me. I have never seen a truck with 30-9.50 that I thought looked that good, they always look too small. Not that 31-10.50's are that much bigger, either. But that is what you have to answer for yourself, I think the general consensus around here would be to go with the 31-10.50. And - my opinion would be the Yoko's over the BFG's. well lotsa ppl run 33x12.50's on 15x8's without problems, so you'd prolly be alright on tire wear with a 4.5" difference between the rim and tire.
as for mpg, my v6 with 4.10's gets around 16 city when I'm driving it fast, and if I drive like an old man without any 4wheelin about 18-19. your 4cyl should do better than that.

I was getting good off road grip, decent pavement performance, and 65-70K out of the Discount Tire Pathfinders in 31x10.5. on stock 15x7s. Cheaper than BFGs. Going to get the Pathfinder A/Ts (currently doing well on the wifes' Runner) next time since I want something quieter/less aggressive.

I have 31" pathfinder SUV tires (came with the 4runner when I got it used) and they are almost gone at 30K, crappy on snow and dirt.

I went through 3 sets, with the same result each time. Anything more aggressive is gonna suck on wet pavement. You sure you had the ATVs and not the ATs?

I actually can't say for sure. I thought they were just called Pathfinder SUV not sure of AT or ATV style

OK, I did it. I went with the 31x10.5 yokohama Geolandar AT+2. I got 5 so my spare would match too. So far, I haven't really noticed any accelleration or handling loss over the 30's, hopefully that translates to not much mpg loss either. I haven't had a chance to put them on the highway yet, but I did hit every deep puddle on the way home from the tire shop trying to hydroplane them. I couldn't. They do make for a much cooler looking size than the 30x9.5's, but I still think that the BFG's tread pattern looks better, the Yoks don't have much of anything on the sidewall. Couldn't beat the price for the Yoks though. Especially for a tire that so many people like the all around performance of. I think I'll be happy.
