Timing belt woes

Doing my timing belt and the right cam moved a significant amount. What do I do?

What engine are you working on?

If you are working on the '88 4Runner, you posted in the wrong forum.

Edit: I see the 3.4 in you sig line. Too much speed reading.

Anywho, the 3vze 3.0 and the 5vze 3.4 are both non-interference engines so you can rotate the cams with no problem....go clockwise and align it to the TDC mark.

Sorry. 3.4 swapped into an 88. Wouldnt one rotation put it in the wrong stroke?

Ah, 3.4....

When the cams are at TDC marks and the crank is at TDC you are good to go so says the FSM and experience.

A excellent how-to from a member here:

I found the thread where Philtog had the same question:

Okay. Anybody else have input? I am extremely nervous. I know this is a noninterference engine but I dont want to mess up.

I think you are right rworegon. I looked at a million different threads and they said the same thing. I'll let you know in a little while.

BTW, use a new crank bolt (it's a non-reusable part per the FSM) from the dealer and torque it to 217 ft-lbs per spec.

Post #24 gives the TB procedure. Page EM-19, step 6 is what you are inquiring about:
http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.ph...&topic=7462.15

Then EM-21, step 10 is the check after the belt is on.

just turn the cam clockwise back around to it's timing mark again, no harm done. I had the same thing happen during my timing belt job a few weeks ago. I think spring tension makes the cam pulleys prone jump off the mark if moved slightly. As long as all 3 pulleys are back on their timing marks when the belt goes on, you are ok.

I bet you broke a tooth off the crank timing pulley. Read my thread:

So I forgot to plug an ignitor pack plug back in. Then it wouldnt crank. So I take the positive leads off the battery and make sure my starter wires are tight. Then hooked the battery back up and it starts! no issues. Thank God.

That writeup is great. I used the same one when doing timing work recently during motor swap. And yeah, cams moved some before we got them all aligned and belt setup perfectly. It was surprisingly easy though.

I'm glad you figured it out!
