Timing belt replacement

I know most of you have replaced the timing belt. I just want an average ballpark price of how much that costs and if I had the water pump replaced with it. I have a coupon here that says it's 275 for just the timing belt, but there is a asterick that says "MOST 6 CYLINDER". Does that sound like a good deal if it falls under that coupon or am I looking at more than 300 dollars? Thanks guys

Sounds like a bit much to me. I just did my '91 V6 and the belt was about $30.00 and it took about 3 hours. You should be able to find someone to do it for around $200 or less, unless there's major differences between your '96 and my '91.

Wootersen, did you replace your timing belt yourself? If so, did you need any special tools or was there anything really difficult about it? I have about 90,000 miles on my current timing belt and was thinking about doing it myself to save some money, but wasn't sure if I should attempt it or not.

whoa VATO!!!!! tha'ts $375 US dollars. I was hoping it wasn't much more than $275. If I do the water pump it would be closer to $500 right? Hey TOR, how much do you guys charge for timing belt and water pump? Thanks

It isn't too bad to do it yourself as long as you are at least a bit mechanically inclined. Be very careful about where everything goes and take pics if you need to (digital cameras are great for this). Only thing special you will need is a chain wrench and a big piece of pipe (like 3' to 4' long) to slide over the ratchet handle. You need these to get the crankshaft pulley bolt off. That will be by far the hardest part. Might wnt to change all the drive belts while you have em off if they need it.
Good luck!
