Tilt steering 2002 4runner...
My tilt wheel has locked in the position I use to drive. The tilt lever arm appears to no longer be attached to whatever linkage is inside the column cover. It appears the steering wheel has to be pulled to access two cover screws located behind the wheel. Does anyone know how involved this could be? Do I need to disconnect the battery before starting? Any help would be appreciated.

Should be three or four screws on the bottom of the cover and two accessed by turning the steering wheel. Then you will see the lever and linkage.I wouldnt think you would have to take the battery cables off your not pulling any connectors loose for the airbag to get at it.I have had the whole steering shaft out of a tacoma once to replace a steering joint.Tilt wheel and all.Took about an hour to remove including the steering wheel. If you ever have to remove the steering wheel then you would need to disconnect the battery.Sounds like you just have a broken lever. It engages a gear on the steering column. If the gear had broken teeth it would be flopping around.
