Tie Rods Bad? How can you tell?

Went to get an alignment done today since my camber is off from installing my lift, and they (Firestone) told me both my left and right outer tie rod ends are bad/frozen! How can you tell if they're bad or not? I need to know whether they're feeding me a line of crap. I'm going to do the replacement myself if they do happen to be bad, but I'm not sure what to look for.

I would say they are feeding you a line, firestone is known for that. spray some pb blaster on them, let them sit overnight, get up the next morning and spray them again, drive to some other alignment place and have them do it, I bet you don't get any complaints. I got one from sears for $60 and 6mos/6000 mile waranty. probably be heading up there in a couple weeks to get the thing aligned again since I adjusted the SAWs a little more and added trim packers to the rear, and replaced the steering rack bushings with ES poly's, and did the front diff drop.

i agree with the above
assuming the threaded/adjuster portion is rusted, just grease them and try adjusting it yourself

Thanks guys! I was thinking the same thing- just lube it up and see what happens. I've ordered the parts anyways, and will probably replace them/keep the old ones for spares, mostly for peace of mind when I drive up to Alaska. But, the good news is I can go wheeling on Thurday!

Well, that would depend on many many factors.
  • How many miles one way from where you are to Alaska
  • When you plan on doing it
  • Whether I can get the time off here at work {˟˟˟˟˟it, I hate being an engineer anyway {at least at this job}, maybe I'll just quit, haha}

My dad used to be stationed Kodiak and that's where I was concieved. I have been wanting to go and maybe this would be a good opp.
