now i know yota's are tough...i currently have an 1984 truck but there have to be a few tips you guys can give a newbie like me

Make sure the engine is running good. Any little miss could be a bigger problem like a head gasket or burnt exhaust valve that the V6 is known for. If anything doesn't sound right with the engine then ask us more specific questions. It can be an expensive engine to replace if it turns out to be in bad shape.

Check over the engine closely. Look for rust around the outside of the rear wheel wells (also, open up the rear storage areas and look from the inside). Crawl underneath and look for anything that doesn't look stock, but should (RTV sealant bulging out, scratch marks from wrenches, etc.). How bad does the rear end sag? Can you put a sideways fist between the tire and wheel well lip? If not, you'll probably be boucing off the bump stops a lot. Has the electrical system been messed with? Figuring out the stock lay-out is tough enough since the diagrams are only about 80% accurate. Check the 4wd system for proper operation. If you get a chance, drain and refill the oil to see if it starts smoking or develops any new leaks. Auto or 5spd? The autos are noticeably slower and it's tougher to diagnose problems with them.

compression test it if you can.... that would be a real good thing to know... also check to see if the check engine light is working, if it is, see if you can pull any stored codes that might indicate pre-existing problems... hope that helps.

Check the tailgate window. Make it go up, down, up, down, up, down...you get my drift. Mine crapped out the day after I bought it. urrrgh.
