while replacing thermostat on 2004 toyota tacoma with 3400 engine when i removed the 3 nuts the bottom bolt the stud came out. When i replaced the stud after installing thermostat the first 2 or 3 threads pull off. Before I go any farther what should i do? any help will be appreciated.

PS By the way i am new to the site.

Either you would have to re thread it with a larger bolt or use thread locker in it.

The stud threads are the ones that pulled off.I was thinking the female threads might still be alright.It was getting dark so I quit for the day.

So are you saying the threads on the housing came out?

no the threads on the stud came off.

take the stud to the dealer and see if they can match you up a new one. Thats what i would do. Or you could go to a nut and bolt place and replace it with a bolt. i'd start at the dealer if it were my rig mainly because the parts specialist at my dealer is awsome and always gives me deals. Oh and make sure you clear out the threads on the other side.

Yeah don't re-use damaged fasteners. Replace the stud or get a bolt to replace it. That being said I find it hard to believe the steel stud was damaged and the softer aluminum threads in the housing weren't damaged. Something wierd going on here. Maybe you mean the end of the stud that the nut goes on?

No it is the end that goes in the housing i can't see the housing threads to see if they are damaged but the end of the stud that screws in the housing has 1 round of the thread pull off and it is on a magnet that i have so i know that for sure.
The picture shows the stud on the right side in picture notice the thread on the tack hammer magnet.

Don't know what else to tell you but get a new stud and see if it screws in easily. If it does thread in smoothly by hand then take it out and put some loctite on in and screw it back in and put your t-stat back on. If it doesn't screw in good might consider running a tap into the hole, if that doesn't go good maybe Helicoil the hole.

I guess if you replace your water pump those studs go with it. EDIT: No, I take that back, look closely at the pic and stud. The studs go though the aluminum water pump piece and into the block behind it.
