where is the temp sending unit on an 87 4runner 22re. I know the is one right above the thermostate, but it is not hooked up and I am still getting a good reading.

Its a crap shoot, but try looking at the base of the radiator. My 87 Mazda 626 had it located there. Just food for thought

It's behind and slightly to the right of the thermostat housing.

If it is there can you explain the one on top of the thermostat housing? Why would they put 2 on it?

IIRC, the one on the t-stat housing is for the ECU while the one behind it is just for the temp gauge.
