I hate having to let other people drive my machines, especially stick shift stuff.
Most clutch problems require dropping the tranny to inspect the clutch.
Try to verify that the clutch hydraulics are as they should be and are not the source of your troubles first, as that stuff is external and can be checked out fairly easily.
Maybe your rig just came down with 'girl cooties'

You should only be able to shift into first gear when your stopped well that is how all mine are any how.
I have to agree sounds like a case of Girl Cooties!!
These things seem to happen when other people drive your vehicles.
I guess it comes down to how many miles are on the clutch maybe time for new.

Yeah, it's not as complicated as pulling the motor. But it does involve getting the car up into the air some (assuming it's not a lifted 4WD Taco), and unbolting the trans and carefully lowering it down.
Then the even harder step of raising the trans back up, engaging the input shaft into the clutch disc/pilot bearing, and carefully sliding it back into the engine.
A real trans jack is well worth the trouble of obtaining. If you're not 4WD it's a lot easier, the transfer case makes the trans a lot heavier and awkward and unbalanced.
If you're not a pretty experienced wrencher, I'd probably leave this to a pro.

I have a couple of links for that:
http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=149715
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runne...enance/clutch/
The FSM is also very helpful, but I don't know an on-line source.
I highly recommend you install the Marlin Crawler Poly shift seat bushings at the same time. Cheap, and makes a world of difference.
I went with the OEM Aisin Clutch Kit, available on Amazon:
I have also heard good things about the Marlin Crawler HD clutches. The Aisin kit has gone up in price so the difference is less now.
This was my first clutch job and I did it on jackstands in the garage. I'd call it a major beyotch. A trans jack was a must--Harbor Freight has a cheapie that did the job just fine. That bell+trans+Xfer weighs a ton and most of those many bolts are VERY hard to get to. But I had time and over the course of a week, a few hours a day, I got it done--solo. You need lots of wobble extensions in various sizes. Harbor Freight has a neat set that was big help.
Do your starter contacts at the same time if you haven't done them. Mine were almost worn through; I am very glad I decided to PM them.
