Tacoma: broken side pop-out window latchs?
As the title reads, mine have broken both in the same day I can count on one hand how many times they have been opened in 2 years. The whole design is week & flimsy IMO just good enough to make it out of the warranty period.
Toyota wants $27.41 locally each for the same flimsy plastic latchs. How do I replace them? seems the part that is connected to the body of the truck will be hard to get at with the inside molding in place. I see no way to remove the molding on the body sides. Also does the part that attach to the glass just unscrew from the glass once the little cover is popped off the outside on the glass? They both broke in the same spot where the pin goes through the arm that connects to the inside wall. When I say they broke in the exact way I do mean it, same identical spot. I call that a defect!
I drilled a small 1/16" hole in each arm & ran some safety wire through it & back around the pin so I could at least shut the windows so the rain could not get in. Temporary fix but it is holding just fine. I can even open them just like before they were broke. As much as the parts cost I may leave it alone & never open them again.

Broken Latch
The windows Quarter Window latch just broke yesterday on my 1989 Toyota Pickup. I guess after a while, they get brittle with the heat in California. The Toyota Dealer wants $59.95 for them. Wow! I hear there are aluminum ones that are available through a custom shop. I sent them an email and am awaiting a response. He was selling some for $30/pair, but for a different year on the Tachomas.

Mine both broke within a few months of each other. One was under warranty and the other broke just after warranty coverage was over. One was replaced under warranty and the other I looked at and said "Forget it" and basically wired it shut like you did. I've used them maybe a half dozen times in the life of the truck and don't see a need to use them much, if at all, ever.
The inside trim panel does come off, but it takes some disassembly and is a PITA. I have better things to waste my time on.

Thanks for the info. I purchased this truck new overseas. Love it. I contacted a Toyota Dealer in Alaska and they wanted $208 for the part. What are they smoking? It must be the whole window attached. Unfortunately, he was the only one in the office. Will keep looking.

Its alittle pain to replace but not horrible. Make sure you get new clips that hold the panels in in case they break. Side panel and rear panel come out. I used duct tape to hold my window shut till I replaced it.

fight UV break down of plastics with armor-all or similar. mist your stuff down on occasion, let it soak in overnight. it's like food for some of this 20 yr old plastic. it's not about the shiny, it's about the molecular cohesion n' what not. science!!~
