Tacoma Axle Wrap Re-visit

So I have had my Taco for almost 2 years now and love it, but the axle wrap drives me nuts. What I have is when I come to a hard stop at a red light, whenever i get green and release the brake I get a good thump thru the drivetrain. From what I found out on here is that is an axle wrap problem the taco's have. Will the dealer do anything or should I just get some sturdier leafs?

Get a better leaf pack. It will be so worth your money to get a good set like Alcan or Deaver and now Downey is getting into the Tacoma leaf business also. Most of these are only offered in a 2" or more lift though. You could also look in your local yellow pages and see of you have a leaf spring shop in your area. They can rebuild and customize leaves very reasonably($). Look at your stock leaf springs and check the arch. If it is negatively arched, arching towards the bed instead of the ground, your springs have de-arched and this is the cause of the axle wrap. Been there and delt with that. It is a major pain. I had a 4x4 so I lifted it and solved it in the process. Good luck with this

Try lube on the drive shaft where it slides in front of the rear end.It will stick and sometimes cause a thump.Axle wrap happens when you take off from a dead stop not when you come to a stop. Those lift blocks will make one do it to.2 inch and up will cause wrap.Mine sagged 1.5 inches over a two year period from the topper on the back.I still dont have axle wrap on take off, but I do get that thump after brake release every now and then. They are known for that.I have a 2004 with 1,800 miles and even it dose it every now and then.Good luck

What mine is doing is thunking from the dead stop, I dont feel it until i let off the brake and barely hit the gas.

Just looked at the spring arch, the back half (behind the rear tire) has the right arch but in front of the tire is pretty much level.

thats actually quite normal... a lot of leaves these days you see with a negative arch from the factory or clsoe to being almost flat.... we have a 3/4 ton work truck chevy.. and its like 10 leaf pack it has are almost flat

I have a 2001 tacoma 4x4. I only have alittle over 30,000 miles on it. I was getting axle wrap when I did a hard stop. I ended up greasing the entire drive line, front and back and my axle wrap is completely gone.

Thanks. I was wondering if I missed something while learning about axle wrap.

It doesn't do a thing for axle wrap, but every time the subject comes up here, someone chimes in with that bit of wisdom. It doesn't address anything related to axle wrap, the pinion angle changing, deformation of soft springs, etc, but someone always offers it as the solution.

An urban legend in the making.
