a/t temp light (newbie)

ok guys i'm a new member here. let me introduce myself. my name is Rene', i live in bakersfield ca, where it's hot as hell. my rig is a 92 sr5 3.slow auto extended cab. the problem i am having here is that i let my dad borrow my truck and he calls me that the a/t temp light has come on, on his way home. he live 30 miles north of me. he was driving on the freeway when the light came on. he also told me that it was leaking fluid. i haven't picked up the truck so i'm sure if it's tranny fluid. this is not the first time this has happened though. the light has came on 3 times this summer. i haven't flushed it so maybe that is what i'll do first.

one thing i know for sure is that i think one of the silenoids is bad because when i drive it and i'm about to jump on the freeway it shift fine in first and second but when it shifts into third the rpm's drop like it lost power. i have to floor it and it still doesn't move any faster. it just gains speed slowly. sorry guys for the long post it's just that i'm alittle fustrated right now. thanks in advance.

Did you get help?

Mine came on and I put a tranny cooler in. Works better now, but worried that it may come on again.

I've heard that if the tranny is overfilled or underfilled it will come on...

If it has a bunch of miles the i woudnt recommend flushing it. I learned the hard way at work, if you flush a tranny over 150k miles then it's pretty much toast and flushing it will only delay the inevitable to rebuild or get a replacement.

You know, that's funny because I never had the light come on until AFTER I had it flushed the first time (see my previous posts). After having it come on several times, and always at the worst possible times, I wanted to know if the light really indicated overheating or if it was a bad sensor. So I installed a trans temp gauge. Guess what? The light hasn't come on since!

I would not do a flush. I would check the level to see where its at. Then drain a gallon, close the drain, add a new gallon of fluid and then more fluid if needed to bring the level to the proper marks on the stick. Drive it a day or two and then do the same drain and refill a gallon again. Drive a couple more days, then do it a third time. This will for the most part, replace the old fluid with new. It will also prevent any debris from being dislodged like what a flush might do.

I replaced mine this way twice so far with over 150k miles on it. Since it was high mileage, and had not been done in at least 100k miles, I did not want to flush it since some people say that after a flush, a high mileage tranny seems to die. So far, knock on some wood, this procedure has worked with no adverse effects.

Have you checked the fluid, colcr, smell and quantity? If the color is anything but red than your trans is overheating. Smell the fluid on the dip stick, does it smell burnt? In any case I would change the fluid and filter/screen in side the trans, and refill with fresh fluid. If it is discolored and smells burnt you may have toasted it. If it is discolored or burnt change it again after 1000 mi filter too and check the pan for junk. Either way you should change it and fix your leak, may even think about an aux. cooler. Good luck and keep us posted. Oh almost forgot check the sender fro the light and make sure its good, wiring to.

I bet after doing all that u still have the prob.Mine over heats every time I'm on the freeway 20 minutes did the flush, blew out the lines and everything else u could think of.When mine overheats it drops fluid out of the bell housing
so I'm assuming the front seal gets so hot it let's the fluid leak.Slosurfer has a cool post on how to install a trans cooler, which i did today and tommorrow
I'm putting in a new raidiator and thermastat. If this helps I'll let u know.
