Question Swap Tacoma Downpipe Catalytic Into 4Runner 2.7 ?? HELP

I just threw a P0420 code on my 4Runner and it looks like it's my Cat. The 4Runners have the downpipe and cat all-in-one. The same year Tacoma has the downpipe and cat in seperate pieces. Why Toyota designed the 4Runner different is beyond me.

I vaguely remember reading something like this. Is it possible to install the Tacoma 2 piece configuration in place of the 4Runner 1 piece? The 4Runner Cat/Downpipe at the stealership is $2172. The Tacoma 2 piece Configuration is $1184 for the Cat and $210 for the Pipe for a total of $1394. A difference of $800

Any advice or suggestions? Has anyone performed this mod ? ?

Parts:

17401-75100 4Runner Cat/Downpipe

18450-0C020 Tacoma Cat
17410-0C020 Tacoma Downpipe

Hi Greg, I'm aware of that option, however I do prefer OEM. I know that quite a few people still get Check Engine lights with Non-OEM cats.

Typically, those people are running "high flow" cats.
If you buy a 50 state / CARB cat (about $300 on the link i sent you) you should have no problems (might be guarantee'd as well).

Just trying to save you $500+++

Have you replaced your o2 sensors? Best place to get OEM ones for a good price is URDUSA.com (good shipping rates too via USPS)

What I might try is order a Bosal Down Pipe ($100 on eBay) and a Ultra Cheap Bolt in Catalytic made for a Tacoma which should be another $100 - $200. My cost to find out if this works will be roughly $300.

If it all lines up and bolts in then I'll run the cat until it burns outn in about a year, then splurge on a Toyota Catalytic.

Just get an EPA certified Magnaflow cat welded in and be done with it.... don't know why you want to go through the hassle....

DO NOT use an aftermarket cat. Seen too many people go this route and still throw a cat code. Grab a box of tissues and pay for the Toyota cat.

Or go ahead and chance it. You can be like these guys and have a butchered up exhaust set up that needs to be cut and welded when that cheap cat fails

Jay, 1st, I'd totally like to know if that downpipe fits. .My exhaust has been butchered in an ugly fashion.

2nd, mine is also running with no CEL and the cat is gone.

3rd, I've seen the aftermarket 4runner pipe and cat for $200 somewhere.

4th, have you changed the rear O2 sensor? You could attempt spacing it back away from the exhasut stream. It looks like the MAF and other things affect this code also. Have you ever looked at the exhaust manifold for leaks? Adjusted the valves?

5th, if it comes down to it, you can buy like 5 aftermarket cats and try them out for the same $$.

6th, done a general tune up?
