Hello Derr,

My granddad has a 99 4Runner 4wd and is starting to get old and can't get into it as easy as he used to. He said that he isn't interested in off roading and would like me to lower it for him. I told him the only think that I have heard of are PP lowering springs and they lower it only an inch. He said that would be fine, but if I cold find something that would lower it further it would be better. I have searched these boards and found the only way to lower it more than 1 inch is to get springs from japan. But I was wondering if it is possible to swap the springs from a 2wd 4runner? But I have some questions that i was wondering if any one could answer for me before i search a junkyard for parts.

1. Are the springs on a 99 2wd v6 4runner compatible(sp?) ?Will the springs for the 96-98 2wd v6 model fit? Or should i go with a 4 cyl model or will the springs be way too weak?

2. Is lowering a truck a simple matter of swapping the springs?

3. Will the lower stance mess up the tires, the drive lines, or steering mechanism?

4. What is a lateral rod and what is it purpose on a vehicle?

4b. If i lower the truck with simply a spring swap will I need a lateral rod?

4c. If i don't install a lateral rod will any thing bad happen? (ie uneven tire wear, poor turning, excessive body roll, 4wd not engaging properly(just list any and everything u think might go wrong)

That is all the questions i can think of for now... Thanks for your help... please no flames.

You really should not go more then 1". The big problem is the rear suspension. There is not much travel to start with and it will bottom out more with 1" drop.

Anymore and the ride will be really bad.

I think Zubaltec on the forum lowered his 4Runner more than an 1inch. Here are a couple of pics.






Have you ever thought about bags? That would lower it way more than 1 inch.

i don't think my grand dad wants to go cruisin down the boulevard hittin switches for his 65 yr old 'itches and some viagra in the glove box... lol .. so i think airbags would be out for him... i guess i will just have to try to get some springs from japan..
