Suggestions Buying New Bumpers

I've got a 2000 4Runner with the OEM metal bumpers. I think (not sure) that the 2001 4Runner's had the metal bumpers switched to plastic (maybe plastic). I wanna replace my metal bumpers with those and was wondering if anyone here has done it. If I go to Toyota directly, I'm sure I will be wasting a lot of money on mark up, so does anyone have any suggestions? I'm trying to put together a plan to get new bumpers and so far started saving money. I need to know the best place to get them, matching the paintjobs, and anything else I'm overlooking. I haven't modded my 4Runner in anyway, so I'm hoping this will be the first project.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

-Matt

hey matt,

check with demello-offroad.com. ask for jason. i was just at his shop and he had quite a few old bumpers in his lot. might not have 4runner bumpers, but its worth contacting him.

also, if youre gonna go through all the trouble of getting a new bumper, consider ARBs or TJMs. lots of guys on the forum have them. search ARB and TJM and youll have a lot of pics and threads to read through!

oh and whats with your sig? do you have an automatic? or a 5 speed??!!?

Cleaned up my sig thanks.

Yea I saw the ARB's and TJM's when searching before, but I still want the OEM bumpers because I like the look. Having the metal just throws everything off (in my opinion). Unless ARB or TJM or anybody else make bumpers similar to Toyota's, I dont think I wanna get them. I'm not going offroading or anything like that, I wanna replace my bumpers just for the look.

Matt,
If you do get rid of your stock rear chrome bumper, I am looking for one in good shape, without rust. I need the center section, but would probably take the whole thing.

Got it, it's gonna be a while before I get them replaced. I just started saving money. Man there's so much I wanna do to the 4R, and it all involves money I dont have. Maybe I'll ask some local shops about replacement bumpers.

Dexter,
I really just need the center section, but would take the whole thing. Based on your location, shipping would be an issue. Please let me know what you would sell the center section for, shipped to Ellicott City, MD 21043.

You can also reply via email: aowalter@comcast.net

andreas,

i have a california rust free 98 bumper off my 4runner. i'm looking to buy a tjm 17, so if your friend wants to buy it, this would be great to offset the cost.

email me at bobkim @ 4runners.org

The 3rd gen 4runners (1996-2002 Model years) didn't come with plastic bumpers. Some (Limited and Sport models) came with painted bumpers. Its still the same metal and plastic pieces that you have now, but only painted instead of plastic.

You can get a quote from a bodyshop to paint them, but that's going to be $500+ easily. Do you know anyone who can paint them for you?

HAHA, I don't mind the hijacking since people are being helped. I did not realize it could be painted and I sure as hell did not realize it would be that much. Whenever I have maintenance work done on my 4R, I let my family friend take it to his friend to do the work off the clock. But, if that's how much it will cost then I'm still going to do it.

All they do is paint the chrome??? The plastic bumpers do not look like the chrome bumpers (ie the plastic molding around the front license plate).

Painting just the chrome is cheaper. Painting the plastic is where it will cost $500+.

I painted the front and rear OEM bumpers and rear tag surround on the 2000 runner that's on http://www.drawhorn.org. I also painted my rear bumper, rear tag surround, limited cladding, fender flares, front bumper, fenders, and hood on my 99...

where do you live?
