Stop/reverse to disengage??

Stop/reverse to disengage??
In the late model Tacos, I read you have to either roll the truck backwards or drive it in reverse a tad to disengage the 4WD?? Advised? Required? Yuck.
My good ol 68TLC with the 4WD/transfer case operated via diaphram off vacuum, I could switch back and forth 2WD/4WD (at slow speeds) without ever missing a beat. I mean, having the inertia means everything sometimes, yanno?
Thoughts?

do you mean the ones with ADD or manual hubs??
my taco has manual hubs and ive noticed that if im driving and shift back to 2WD i sometimes have to let off the gas or give it a quick blip to make it switch.
if im at a stop and put it back into 2WD i sometimes but not often have to back up a tad then go forward to make it switch.
my wifes 95 4runner with ADD has no trouble at any speed going back and forth to 4WD.

My Taco is a 2002 w/o manual hubs, so I guess ADD. (What does ADD stand for?)
I havent had the truck long, so havent had the opp to take it out and play/experiment/etc.

ADD.........automatic differential disconnect = no having to get out of your truck to turn the hubs, but it also means the half shafts(cv joints) up front are always spinning.
im pretty sure the ADD in the newer trucks is the same or very similar to the one in my 4runner. i never have an issue switching in or out of 4WD like i sometimes do with my taco/manual hubs.

Which leads me to the next question. The front wheel drive disconnects in the transfer case? Ok.
With the TLC, Ive always had the luxury of locking hubs. Free wheel the front axel the time till I get anywhere where theres a prospect of wanting the front drive on line. Then lock the hubs, and run in 2WD till the need for 4WD arises.
Ive read whats involved to retro these late model Tacos to accomodate locking hubs. (Believe me, I wish I had them on this rig.) After some deliberation, Im electing to NOT go out and find a wrecked Taco to part out then go through the headache to convert the 2002. Having been through the CV joint senerio (with Hondas), Ill just run with that mentality, and put up with the relatively insignificant lower gas mileage.
Remember one of the big reasons we buy Toyotas. In spite of some design flaws, theyre still pretty bullet proof!!
