Stock Wheels? or Aftermarket?

SS 1.2 kit and goodridge stainless brake lines (only using the front 2, ss kit comes with rears) arrives in the mail tomorrow! but i work all weekend and its gotta wait till monday

i promise, i have searched so please b merciful if its already out there.

i am getting some 285/75/16 toyo open county all terrains or nittos... still deciding but the size is for sure.

I am weighing the pros and cons of getting aftermarket wheels. I am just building a general purpose 4runner that can handle a little of everything. im not totally sold on the "utility" look of a steal/black rim. my runner still has some decent paint and the stock polished wheels look pretty classy.

I would like to get a little wider track to help with stability now that it will b taller but i wonder if any has had problems like uneven tire wear, destroyed wheel bearings, or anything like that.

so after all that explanation, stock wheels or after market?

also why does everyone stay with 16s and not to something slightly larger? cuz more rubber is more useful then more rim?

If you're set on getting 285's, I would get an aftermarket set of rims with a 4" backspacing, and in 16x8. However, if it were me, I would get 255/85/16's on stock rims. It's a bit narrower than the 285's, but just as tall. And you won't have issues with rubbing (still might need to trim a little). Also, the difference in track won't be a factor in stability. steve at sonoran steel offered that option as well. who makes an all terrain in that size?

In addition, a taller, narrow tire's sidewalls deflect more under severe turning forces, causing the inside of the tires contact patch (midline to the vehicle) to lift (roll in) from the road, increase the chance of a high shear force skid, or loss of control."

yikes.

i totally get this article and will defiantly consider the 255 (tho i have not found alot of companies that make them)

i would still like to see some discussion about the wheels. thanks cackalak han for your input. great article!

I have a silver 99 limited and plan to get a set of these in 16 x 8 with the new Kuhmo M/T (265 75 16). Here is a link to the tires and a pic of the rim:

Too fancy for off roading IMHO, but its your truck. I do like the rubber though

i guess i should ask my biggest question again. has anyone running 16x8 aftermarket rims with less backspacing then stock had any issues with wheel bearings or steering parts? i almost slide off an exit ramp the other day cuz the highway terrains my runner has r bald as hell. i def need to move on the tire rim thing before chicago snow! yikes!

if you have the stock 5 spoke limited wheels then u can run 285's no prob - i am and so are many others - plus they look sweet with a 285 wrapped on em.

I am running 16x8's with toyo LT285/75's on them and have absolutly no problems not even any rub but the 3" body lift probably has to do with that

I would personally (and plan to) powder coat your stock 5 spokes black.

Then get some 1" - 2" spacers and then put those 285's on there.

I plan on doing exactly that, already have the spacers, just need the powerder coating and tires.

Pro-comp has plenty of wheels in 16x8 and various spacing options. I don't know of anyone that has had a problem with running 16x8 4" backspacing. Larger tires are more of a culprit of a problem than the wheels.

Also, 285's and wider track won't help with stability, IMO. I mean, we're talking 2-4" of difference of track width and a little bit more rubber. Tire material will be more of a factor here.

255/85's are available from several difference manufacturers and in A/T and M/T. Cooper STT's and BFG KM(2)'s are some of the favorites.

I am not lifted, so I am picking up some BFG KO's in 235/85/16 this week or next. As mentioned in the article, there are pro's to the narrower tires. MPG's being the main factor for me.
