I happened to be looking at the VIN sticker on the driver's side door jamb and noticed that it shows the stock tires as being 225/75/R15. My 4 Runner is an SR5 that came with 16's. Does this mean 15's will fit on mine or does every 3rd gen show that reguardless of which wheel it came with?

nope 15s will not clear the brake caliper those vin tags are not 100% accurate

15's might actually clear but your going to have to try them and see. I tried them on mine and it won't but my door jamb reads 265/70/16.
