State-by-state laws for "altered height" vehicles

In retrospect to a thread talking about WA state laws reagrding "legal" bumpers (reference this thread), I tripped over a blurb in this months 4-Wheel Off-Road magazine.

It looks like SEMA has compiled a state-by-state list of laws covering various legalities around the height of parts on a vehicle. Things like bumpers, headlights, tire/wheel sizes, etc.

The list is available on CD, and it's online as well:

The regs for Virginia are inaccurate. The ones cited in the SEMA website apply to vehicles registered with the VA DMV as "Trucks." Our 4Runners and related SUVs are registered as "Passenger Vehicles" and don't list the GVWR on the registration. As a result, front and rear bumpers on SUVs in VA maybe not be higher then 22".

Bummer... Someone should let SEMA know. Feel like dropping them a line? A guy from WA can't really comment on VA.

I think I've got you one upped here in Louisiana. We come up as the only state REQUIRING lifts for those that don't meet the standard from the factory.
"Vehicles must have at least 4” of ground clearance measured from frame with vehicle on a level surface."
Gotta Love the Durty South.

Sadly hawaii laws are correct. None the less most people here lift higher than 6" and dont care. They jsut pay the ticket everytime they get pulled over.

I don't know why they don't list any bumper height laws for Washington state. Hell, I've got the little sheet that shows the maximum legal bumper height laying around somewhere. I get one everytime I get pulled over in my Jeep, which has been numerous times.

Lived in WA for 2 years, but my Jeep is legally registered in Idaho, so they never write me a ticket.

No one enforces hieght laws in SC, I dont even think we have any.....I was following a lift fullsize chevy (which i thought was a lift ranger at first since tires were so big, made the truck look small) and when I pulled up behind him at a stop light I could look straight out an see the car in front of him, musta had 40+ tires on it, tractor tires or something.....

Yeah we worked on a guy's truck at work. It was a 90 K1500 rolling on 44's. Best part is it's for sale. Sweet truck. South Carolina wont do anything to you because its pretty much a part of our lives.
