squealing noise

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum, Happy Holidays!

My 1999 4-Runner has developed a quealing noise. It does not do it when idling or when accelerating, but when I get up to speed and let of the gas it starts to squeal. I thought maybe the water pump, but that would leak antifreeze and squeal all the time. I thinking it’s a belt.

Also, I have 106,000 miles on it, I had the timing belt changed at 59,000. When should it be changed again?

Welcome, I hope you've got a fat wallet!

As for the squeal, you'll need to be a little more specific. How loud is it? What does it sound like? Etc.

The Toyota dealers that I've asked the question about the timing belt servicing have all said to me to it's good for 100,000 miles before needing to be replaced.

The squealing noise sounds like a bad fan belt to me. It’s odd though that it dose Not do it while accelerating or at idle. But, if you accelerate to 30mph (for example) and let off the gas, then it squeals. I think I’ll change the belts, looks like a pain to get at them.

This is a great site. Thanks for the input.

As far as the timing belt goes, i'll wait until I get 140,000 on it.

I am having the same exact issue. I have changed all the belts including the timing belt... No change. I checked the U joints and the drive shaft seems solid and will probably end up changing them anyways but for now I have just lubed them. I still have the squeal. Forgive me if I am wrong but I am asuming that you also have a 4x4 automatic. I will post any results as far as the U joints as soon as I get some time and figure out how. Good luck

I have the same exact issue in cold weather. I've replaced all the belts and tranny fluid and still have the squealing noise. The noise is less noticeable, almost non existent, during the warmer months.

I also hear it when I slow down and not when I accelerate.

I don't know if it's coincidence but it started happening after my first timing belt change.

I'll post any updates. I'm just too busy at work right now to take it in to be checked.

Also, please post any updates you have.

Good luck.

From Yahoo Answers:
I've had this problem for years and it's such an easy fix. The drive shaft has two grease fittings near the differential. One is inside the U-joint and the other is outside of it. Grease those and you'll be in business.

The squeaking comes from the drive shaft being on and off load. The drive shaft moves back and forth and up down when you accelerate and decelerate. When you decelerate it takes the drive shaft off load and begins to rub against itself. That's where the squeal is coming from!!

My truck's grease fittings were completely empty. I had to pump the grease gun about 15 times to fill it up. Now it runs like a champ.

My squealing still occurs when I take it out of gear and rev the engine. I dont know how the ujoints can have a load on them with the clutch put in. Do you have any other answers for me?

Thanks for your time

I have the same problem on my 1999 limited 4wd. It only does it when it gets colder out. no noise all summer , now it has got colder out it squeals sometimes when I get up to speed and not accelerating , just maintaining speed or slightly decelerating. does not do it at idle at any rpm , and does not if i touch the gas a bit to accelerate. It really annoying and almost embarrassing to drive with. I have changed the belts with no luck. I let a friend drive and stuck my head out the window lol to try to get an idea where it is. It sounds like it is under the hood on the passenger side near the back of the hood. any ideas?

My 91 4Runner is making a loud squeeling noise when idling. Accelerating and decelerating it is dead quiet. What could this be?

I thought it might be a bad PCV valve, but I pulled out the dip stick and the idle changed, same thing when I took the oil cap off, but the squealing is still there. Does this mean it's not a bad PCV? The squealing isn't only at idle. It's there when there is little or no load on the engine. When I am off the gas and shifting gears it can be there and if I am cruising at very light throttle. Does this sound like a vacuum leak or is it something like the idler pulley? It's hard to tell where exactly the squeal is coming from. I'm going to go have a listen and see whether I can find the source.

Here's a few easy to do checks:
You can go around the engine with a propane bottle w/ a screw-on valve slightly opened and if there's a vacuum leak, the idle should change when the propane is near the leak.

You can also look at the idler pulley and see if it's wobbling at all while the engine's idling.

I have had the same problem for 6 years and had it looked at by 3 different mechanics. Throughout that time I was never able to find a solution in any forum. However, now that I have been able to get it fixed, someone else has posted the solution. Gulligin's solution is exactly the same as what my fourth (and now life-long) mechanic came up with. He commented that initially he could not lubricate the "dual u-joints" with the grease gun but after clearing the rust out of the channels with a piece of wire, realized the differential was bone dry. He had me bring the truck back a month later and added grease for a second time. It now runs perfectly.

I have this same problem. Speed up, no squeak, slow down, big squeak. I'll take Gulligin's 5 year....no make that 11 year....no again, make that 16 year old advice. I'll take that 16 year old advice and put it into play first thing in the morning. Might as well, I've tried almost everything else. Thanks, Gulligin! I'll post the results.
