Speedometer Issues on my 96 Tacoma 4x4
I've got a 2.7 Liter 4wd 96 Tacoma and the speedometer stopped working. It happened awhile ago with some squealing annoying noises coming from the speedometer then it stopped working. I need to fix it, so the CEL will turn off and I can smog it.
I've done TON's of research and have found that the likely culprit is the speedometer cable.
I just want to be 100% sure before I pay the stealership $135 for a new cable.
So I've looked at the end that goes into the transmission and it looks good. I've pulled the cluster and and driven and saw the inside gear of the cable turning, so I know it isn't broken or anything. Also here is a picture of how far the gear protrudes from the plastic casing:
Is this normal? Because to me the cable looks perfectly fine. When the cable broke on one of my other cars the inner gear had actually backed out so far I couldn't even see it.
Now as far as testing the cluster I don't have a power drill, so it was kind of hard. So I whittled down a chopstick into a square to try and manually spin the gear in the back of the cluster and I think the speedometer needle moved a little.
I'm kind of at whit's end here..the cable seems fine to me and the cluster seems fine as well. Any insight?
