So I lifted my 4runner it has 285/75 tires and Im getting sliders in about a week and a half and an arb bumper around the same time so im sure its going to be slooooow and gas mileage keeps going down.
Its either 4.56 or 4.88. What would you suggest and why ? Its my dd so keep that in mind. Please post links of everything I need because im a complete newb on this subject. Ive heard good stuff about precision gears so I may go with them. How much am I looking and I have no clue where to get them installed. Is it worth it ? Ive called around but nothing. Im in Richmond KY. Just give me some info please. Thanks.

One guy pmed me and he can get oem gears 4.56 for about 650 and install them for 100. Reasonable ?

That price seems more than fair. I think... almost TOO good. ... $100 for install is way low...

Check out Randy's Ring and Pinion. They sell the sets, and you also need install kits for both diffs. This supplies some of the misc items needed to install the gears correctly.

Depends on how much highway driving you do compared to around town driving. The lower gears (4.88) will be better for driving around town, where you are stopping a lot. The higher gears (4.56) will be better on the highway.

Also if you're doing any wheeling at all, I would automatically go 4.88. If you're doing a ton of highway driving on it, then it would be stupid. Also, if you go 4.88 and don't like it, you can always go to a larger tire...

The guy is local to me so I guess thats why he is gonna do it cheap.
Its my dd. I would like to wheel but im in highschool and work about everyday so it doesnt happen alot. The only reson im leaning toward the 4.56 is he can get them for a deal then install them for me. How would 4.56 do offroad ? I just changed my tires to the 285's lol.

that 650 for gears front and rear and install kits? if install kits its a basic deal and without install kits its not good at all.

Try east coast gear supply and tell them your with yotatech and ttora. I could get v6 ring and pinion for 180 shipped to my house. Then a little over hundred for each of the install kits then about the same for the front gears.

I pay around 75 bucks for install.

I would not order from them. I have heard and experienced first hand them messing up an order (wrong parts, wrong shipping, wrong cost).

My old 4 cyl 98 Tacoma came stock with the 31" tires and 4.10 with my 5 speed. I went with 33's with 6" of lift and regeared to 4.56 and loved it on the highway, in town and on the trails. It put me just a tad better than I was bone stock. Find the gear ratio/tire size chart (I don't have the link but you can search and find it) and you'll get an idea of where you should be with the tires you currently have. Is he charging $100 for the front and the rear or $100 each? Just curious.

He told me he could get the 4.56 already setup and ready to install then do the instal for 100 so im assuming 100 for both.

If your mostly on road, 4:56 is good. I have 285/75s with 4:56 locker and it pulls my 2 jet skis out of loose gravel with ease. With the stock 4:10 non-locker I had issues. 4:88s will be good if you are going to do more wheeling.

I can get stock 4.56 gears for 650 installed. The gears are 550 and the 100 to install. He said there already put together then its just a bolt in job..

What year 4-Runner and what engine? If you've got a 4banger I would not even mess with 4.56's. Lots of rigs came STOCK with 4.56's and some autos with 4.88's even. If your gonna spend all the time and money to regear make it worth your time. I've regeared my 4-runner twice now because I didn't plan ahead. 4.88's and 33's (or 285's) is real close to a stock ratio. I'm now at 5.29's and 37's and my speedo is only 2mph off at 65 so it's really close too. I think you would be disappointed with 4.56's.

Also steer clear of PORC and do your homework and make sure your gear installer knows his stuff. Gears are something that can very easily done half assed. They'll work for a while but a poor set up will blow up pretty easily.
