some info with body lifts for a 1999 4Runner

Hello,
I am going to place an order for a 4crawler 2inch bodylift for my 1999 4runner Limited. I have seen the website Roger Brown offers on installation that was on a 1996 I believe. Anyone out there with a 99 that has installed a 2inch 4crawler BL that can provide the following info...

Any modifications to ANYTHING on the truck?

Are there any hoses or wires that ended up too short or needed added? I have seen a 2inch lift runs alittle close with not having enough hose, etc.

Any other tips or concerns before I install.

I appreciate the help... this is my first mod that I am doing. My friend that works in a service dept of a car dealership will help me (he has all the good tools)

from what I've read, 2" isn't that bad to install. I did my 1" by myself. I don't think you'll have to extend anything, but I could be wrong.

i used the 2" RB Ultimate BL on my 99 SR5 with no problems at all. Biggest issue I had was getting to the rear body mounts which helped that my friend pulled on the interior panels while i go to the bolt.

No problems at all though, it's a great product.

oh yeah i forgot, I also had a WAAG brush guard that I had to modify to make it fit since it mounts onto the frame. The bumper support bar also did not fit. Welding plates onto those mounts to offset the holes will fix the problem.

The hardest part is installing the steeing shaft extension, take your time and have fun! It's not a big job by any means, just pay atention to which bolts go where.

There is a list of items for the 2" and taller lifts on the 3rd gen install page (I e-mailed this to you earlier today):

http://www.4Crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/....shtml#Updates

Generally 2" has no big issues on the 3rd gens, aside from access to the spare tire winch.

Also, it is hard to give absolute answers regarding what issues you may run into with various height body lifts. There seems to be a fair amount of variations in the way the vehicles are assembled, so while some folks have no issues at 2", while some have problems at 1". Others will have minimal issues at 3" while other find more things to fix up at 2". Also varies with vehicle types, a Tacoma is usually harder to fit a given lift on than a 3rd gen 4Runner, for example. So basically all the possible things one might run into are addressed on the installation page; not that any one person will run into everything listed.

WELL, I installed the 2 inch BL tonight ( I will get some pictures up on Friday.) It took about 4 hours with 3 friends. Not too bad, the worse part was the rusted bolts on the steering column. SUCKED !

Anyways, I do need some help... After installing the lift, I noticed my 4WD shifter is not engaging like it use to.... It now grinds and pops into 4Hi and 4 low then back to 2 Hi.... not sure what I can do to correct this???? Any ideas or help. I also noticed that the 4WD shifter is sitting towards the rear of the truck now... before it was in the middle of the opening. (I will take pics of that as well)

My auto transmission works good so far... I also have a slight issue with the second spacer back from the front...the driver side and pass. side were unable to use the supplied BL bolts and nuts. I had to use a few washers to achieve a tight fit for the nut on the driver side,,, and had to use the original Toyota bolt/nut on the pass. side since the BL bolt/nut were too long to use for some strange reason... any ideas?

THANX. Truck looks good though...

As I replied to your e-mail:

Sometimes there are different length hardware used at the factory. I try to supply bolts that work with *most* of the 3rd gens, but every once in a while they don't fit. If the old bolts work, fine, if the new ones work with some washers, fine. If you want to return the unused bolts with a list of the desired lengths, I can send those to you.

Did you check the t-case shift lever for binding?
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/...l#ManualTranny

Regarding the shifter location, if it is angled other than vertical, it'll appear to move in the direction the lever is angled. That is if the lever sits angled to the rear and you raise the body, the lever will appear to move back since as the body raises around it, the intersection of the angled lever and the plane of the floor of the body moves back. If you want to re-center the lever in the opening, you can bend the shifter back to a more vertical orientation. Another option is a short throw shift kit:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/...l#Installation

This both raises the shifter 1" and also cuts the angle that the lever sits at (by half) and that combination restores the lever to about the stock location with 1/2 the old throw.

Thanks for the quick reply..are there any concerns with the electronic side button on the 4WD shifter if I were to bend it or make it longer???

I don't know, have a look at it and if you can't decide, take a picture and e-mail it to me. Usually no need to bend the lever, almost nobody does so. Just make sure the inner boots and base plates are not causing any binding. None of those parts can be seen once the top decorative boot is installed. So don't worry about trimming back anything you need to in order to get the shifting working right again:

Trim around the boots:

or invert the boot:

or both. You just need to to a little investigating to find out what is causing the problem and then the solution is usually obvious. If the lever is binding against the shifter boot base, cut it back. If it is binding against the boot, push the boot down or invert it.
