I have a 98 Tacoma that's been in California its entire life (not at the beach). As you can see from the photos below, there is some rust on the frame. My Taco is covered by Toyota's warranty extension for frame rust.

I took it to be inspected at a local dealer who seemed unfamiliar with the warranty coverage and process. They said it's just surface rust and not covered (and don't worry).

What do you think?

usually, the extended warranty is for PERFORATION rust, as in, rotted all the way through. i don't know the specifics of today's warranties though, as my truck is 22 years old.

what you have there looks easier to fix and be done with it, rather than wait for it to rot further and try to claim through toyota.

get some steel wool, scrub those rust spots, and apply POR-15, rustbullet, or similar.

I would say it looks fine for a 13 year old truck. You should see the ones from here in upstate NY! Clean it up and paint it and you'll be fine.

That's not worth a warranty claim at all.

As tj884 said, just get yourself some steel wool or a wire brush, scrape the hell out of it and hit it with some POR, paint, etc and you'll be fine.

The more time you spend scraping it off, the better it will be. You can never completely get rid of rust, but the more you get off now the better off you will be in the long run.

That's it? You call that rust? LOL! From what it looks like I bet at one time a battery leaked acid.

That's not a lot of rust, but why take the chance? You don't want your frame to crack at highway speeds, do you? Because it can happen! The frame cracks, you lose steering, flip over 20 times, get ejected and get run over by a semi-trailer. You don't want that to happen, do you? That's what can happen if the frame cracks. Did I say that rust will cause it? No. But in case your frame cracks, now you know what can happen. Not that it will. That is very unlikely. But it can. Think about that.
