its always had a little slip to it, since i got it more or less, which i figured was normal. turns out... it was on the way out.

oh well. just thought id share, bc i will be taking a break from wheeling while i recover from the cost

Probably had something to do with all those nites at the strip, and those autocross events...

i wouldn't expect such a problem in a truck like yours, but yeah...i guess it can happen.

thanks. i am surprised as well, expected longer life out of my tranny than 113K.

oh well. big tires, lift and daily driving and long drives to wheel cant have helped

im looking forward to seeing how the new tranny feels.

Sorry to hear about that man, but honestly, a grand seems cheap for a new tranny...I've heard people paying upwards of 2k!

Kind of makes me worry about mine...weird that yours went out so early.

1- why not have the tranny rebuilt?

2- How could it have gone at 113,000 ???
Was it abused ?
I don't believe standard offroading or long drives would do it in.
Maybe no fluid change??

Get the trans cooler and see if they can put better plates in it to make it an overall better trans. If you dont mind the 6 hour drive, level 10 can have your trans done and it will be way betetr built: http://www.levelten.com/

i didnt know the price at the time. i now know it is closer to 2K all said and done

what did it do? it died on me. suddenly. on the highway.

i went from 60 mph and my pedal keeping me going to my pedal doing nothing but revving the engine.

i got EXTREMELY LUCKY and can say someone was looking out for me up there bc i was able to glide to the ONE little inlet they have on that highway for breakdowns. sure, i was slowing down to as low as 40 to 30 to 20 to 10... then rolling into that spot, but i got there in rush hr traffic... whew.

1-i have no time. i need my truck to get to work. as it is i borrowed mommys car today, will again tomorrow, i leave for a business trip saturday, and have important meetings mon and tuesday, so i dont have time to deal with it. besides i am getting a good deal on a used tranny and install. i am keeping the dead tranny, so maybe i can rebuild it and sell it.

2- fluid was changed last sept. i was gonna do it again soon. i have NO idea how this happened so soon.

one thing ill say is it has always slipped (very little) from day 1 of ownership but i assumed that was normal operation more or less, bc i bought her at 44K and it has operated virtually the same way up to 113K.

save up for what? i did that service at 90K.

i will save up for a tranny cooler next...........

Sorry to hear about the tranny Lee. I had heard from John (over at IPT) a while back that the 01-02 trannys were a little weaker than previous versions in some areas. I can try to dig up the thread if I get some time to do so. If I were going to have someone rebuild it, I'd take the trip to bring my old one down there to have him do it since I think he's a little cheaper than Level 10 (not 100% sure on that).

Maybe just a bum unit or the previous owner did something unusual.

How long do 3rd gen Runner tranny's last anyhow?? under normal conditions.
I would guess 113,000 miles to still be the infancy of most toyota driveline parts...........with proper maintenance that is.

Great.... that makes me all warm & fuzzy inside. I do agree with the others, a Hayden cooler is the way to go. Quick install and worth the peace of mind since heat is the number one killer of trannys. Not sure if your 'fluid change' constituted a full flush, if not, its definitely worth the extra nickles, whether you decide to use synthetic or not.

Sounds like you just got a bad unit or the previous owner abused it if its had a slip that long....
