Shifter lever seat and bushing replacement
Hey guys,
I've searched and read all the post concerning the "sloppy shifting" and the popping out of gear that some have experienced. That makes me feel better since I'm experiencing the same things with my 5-speed. At first it started to pop out in first and now that has stopped and its started to do it in third.
I have also read and reread the thread:

but it does not really make sense to me. I talked to the dealership and they did not know what the hell I was talking about. They were trying to tell me that my sychros had gone bad. I want to to this procedure as soon as possible, but I'm a bit weary to tackle it.
Can anyone else offer any advice or instructions to this replacement? Or are there any other write up on this procedure? The procedure seems pretty straight forward, however I don't want to get in the middle of it and figure out that I cannot accomplish it.

That's the write-up I followed. it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. the write-up is straight forward so I can't offer any other advice.

Yea I guess that it will be a bit easier to comprehend when I get it in front of my face.
About how long did it take you to accomplish?
Mine is a 93 5-speed. So I assume that the part numbers that are referenced in the write-up from a 92 are the same as mine.

I concur, the bushings are really easy to change.
It also fixed the problem I was having once in awhile when it would pop out of first. I had forgot that it fixed it until you mentioned that.

I appreciate the propt response and the words of wisdom. I'm gonna get the parts after work tomorrow from the dealer and hopefully have them installed by the weekend.

Hey.. It 's Ken's write up.. Ken is one of the members of my wheeling club, the "Yankee Toys" (TLCA) This is like everyone else said, a very easy job to do.. Buy the parts and get in at it.. It will take very little tiem and works great.. MIne did pop out of gear a lot and hard when it did.. It has been 2 + years with not a glitch or ever poping out of gear again..
BTW, Most only need the ring not the small one at the end of the shaft.

This is a really odd question, but, how crisp is the shifting on your trucks? I have only driven 3 other manual trans. cars, (2 escorts and a neon) and I felt the shifter really synch in when I shifted, where as the toyota seems to just float in. Is this pretty normal, or can you feel it distinctly come into gear? Sorry if the question is confusing, if it is, I will reword it for you guys.

WOW.......what a difference that made. You guys were right about it being an easy job, ~40 minutes. My shifter seat was totally disinegrated into about 5,000 parts.
The truck only has 75K miles on it. It makes me wonder what the previous owner did to it.
I would highly recommend anyone with sloppy shifting or popping out of gear symptoms to do this procedure. The shifting in greatly improved 100%. Drives like a whole new truck.

I subscribed to this thread knowing I was gonna do it very soon. Tonight, I got the new parts installed - what a difference!! My shift seat was in 8 fragments - it was like that game "Operation" pulling each piece out with needlenose pliers (forgot my tweasers were confiscated at the airport).
The shifting is so much smoother now...

I paid $21 but it for some reason they gave me both the Bushing and the Seat with that one number. I guess it's a kit or something.

Question for all that have experienced this topic and replaced the parts. What exactly do you guy's mean when you say "sloppy shifting"?
I am not having a problem with the tranny poping out of gear, I am having a problem getting into gear. Particulary 2nd and reverse. So I was wondering if this part might be the culprit / fix for it.

I used to have trouble as well shifting into 2nd, but after the bushing swap, it was a lot easier. Still get a little grindage every once in awhile, but that could mean that the particular syncros for that gear are starting to wear. You could be experiencing the same problem. But try the bushings first, its easier than you think to do and cheaper to pay the 15 bux for the part rather than paying 500 for a tranny rebuild just to replace those syncros.

I had some occassional popping out of first gear, it was also rough going into reverse. Only time will tell if it pops out of first gear, but going into reverse is more smooth. I'm just baffled as to how this gasket type thing makes it much more smooth......
I have 172k miles on my rig. I bought it with 67k miles on it. I doubt it had ever been changed out.
I got my parts from Todd (TOR) on this board....
