Hi everyone,

My tranny (2WD 4sp)won't shift into 1st or 3rd, but 2nd and 4th work fine. This doesn't seem to be a synchro problem, so I went ahead and did some searching. I found this link

I bought the two bushings at Toyota and then went to work. I removed everything (carpet, boot) up to the shifter. Then, as per the instructions, I tried to remove the "collar" that holds the shifter in. No workee... and no pictures to clarify. So I tried to remove the 4 bolts that hold the top part of the tranmission plate on. I got the top 2 off, but the bottom 2 are a real PITA. I can't reach them with an extension, but I could slide in the socket and remove one. The other one I have no idea. I tried/cussed for an hour before retiring to the computer.

Now, my questions. Has anyone tried this by removing the collar and done it? And failing that, does anyone know if I can get the top off to get to the bushing? I'd happily go to Sears and get a u-joint if that is the case, I just don't want to buy it to remove the plate if there is no point.

I've done them on 4wd trucks by removing the plate. Trying to remove just the shifter is a PITA, putting it back together is worse. Does yours look something like this?



And if so, you are replacing item 33548F in the pic? If so, it is far easier to remove the whole assembly as opposed to just the shifter.

I haven't done it but.... From the article:


So press down on it with the one hand, and use some vice grips or channel locks to twist. I don't think you'll get the bushing out removing the entire plate, as there will be a ridge underneath holding the bushing so it won't fall down into the tranny.

I haven't done it yet, but that's what I am thinking anyway.

Bob, thanks for that link.

It's got probably all the detail I need to get the lever out. Before, I had no idea how or what to twist! Pictures really are worth more than a thousand words. (Boy I'm corny) Thanks a million!

I always used needle nose pliers to remove the collar. Makes it easy to take one part of the pliers and push down and the other to grip a little and turn.
