Separating engine and tranny in 1990 3.0 4Runner

Well, just looking for advice from those who have been down this road before. What's the best policy for separating the tranny and the engine. Obviously the bolts along the bottom and side aren't too bad, but the one's toward the top seem almost impossible. I have the intake mani off, but the valve covers and below are still attached. Do you all usually remove the heads to get to the higher bolts?

Also, anyone have any tips on getting the motor mounts loose. They look like they'll be fun as well.

Thanks!

Just a socket, then a u-joint(don't know the name for that piece), then about 3 extensions to have your ratchet behind your transfercase. I recently replaced the engine in my '97 and a month later I had to take the trannie of again. That's how I did it. For removing the engine, I remove the intake plenum and then unplugged all the injectors and other wires. Then I move the wires onto the windshield wipers.
Good luck, I hope this helps

It helps to remove the rear cross member and lower the tail end of the tranny / transfer case. That way you can get to the top bell housing bolts with a long extension and a swivel (universal joint).
