Sending unit for gas gauge
Is the sending unit the same for all years of 3rd gens? I have a '96 now with a beat up tank and the gas gauge reads 1/4 tank when full and after about 50 miles reads empty. A buddy has three wrecked 3rd gen 4runners-'96, '98, and '00. I'm going to get the tank, pump, and sending unit out of of one of them, jsut need to know which to get b/c they might not all be good.

Dont touch any 99 or 00 sending units.

they are likely going to have the same issues your first one had, if inaccuracy is the only issue....many of us have just learned to watch one of our trip odometers. As the mileage approaches 250 miles or so I know I need to fill up and typically only can put in 13-15 gallons.
Toyota put out a Tech Service Bulletin on this. I would locate it and read up to be sure.

some folks have tweaked their pickup and sending units. I have seen threads regarding this topic here and over on T4R.org.
search "sending unit"
"gas gauge inaccurate" and the like
If you are determined to go new then of course be sure it has a decent warranty so you can have some time to determine if you really solved that issue.
You seem determined to drop that tank, so new may be the way to go.
