Seat belt retraction

On both my 4Runners I've had issues with the seatbelt not retracting when I get out. Everything works fine while I'm driving, and they do lock up.

Any idea how to get the belt to retract back in when unbuckled? It's very annoying as I sometimes slam the buckle in the door when I forget to see if it's gone up.

I have never driven a Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner that did not have this problem. I recall a TSB in which Toyota was disassembling and cleaning the belt tensioner thing-a-ma-bob. Even my brand new '03 did this though.

A reply to an older post...I attepted this fix but unfortunately that write up lacks many details. I am having trouble removing the plastic trim piece that covers the tensioner. Does anyone know if a better write-up exists for this often needed fix??

I used a small flat head screwdriver to pry up on the snaps on the "crack" area. Then both pieces should separate.

Yea when i was taking my car apart for soundproofing I was going to do that, my friends always shut the seat belt in the door. I dont know if i should be touching those, they have the wires hooked up with the airbag system because of the seatbelt tensioners.

I did this and it didn't seem to do anything to my old ass first gen.
Hopefully it works better for you 3rd genners. Whatever you do, don't open the spring mechanism it's a nightmare. After the article didn't help. I tried to Mcguyver it. No dice, but luckily I fixed it so it is at the same crappy retraction rate it was before I wasted 4 hours on it.

Does anyone know if you can order a new spring set for the retractors form Yota. I have a feeling they will want to sell me a whole new seat belt. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I've got a 96 SR5 V6 5SPD 4runner. Both belts occasionally dont retract, but not enough to worry about. I'm just wondering if anyone else has rattling door pillars where the retractors are. Mine rattle on both sides and its so anoying.

i usually tuck the belt into the seat on the passenger side, just hook it around the edge of the back support.. fixes my rattling problems (if you meant the buckle against the plastic?)

The noise is from somewhere inside, behind the plastic. maybe I can solve my problem by wrapping the belt around my neck?

bummer, although it won't stop the rattling, it will stop you from hearing it...
