Safe w/ out skids?
Hey Everyone,
I'm in the process of "de-mudding" the underbody of my 94 4runner...
I have all the skid plates off...Front, middle little one, and gas tank skid.
Is it safe to drive with these off??
The only one i am concerned with is the gas tank. Will i be able to drive, on road only, with the gas tank skid off? For about a day or 2?
Thanks guys,
Mike

no worries mate, get her cleaned up and while you are under there, check all your wire connections, hoses, brake lines etc. might be a good time to do the fuel filter aslo.

Skid plates have been optional on almost every truck built since the dawn of history (and even then the factory ones aren't very sturdy.) Toyota is one of the few (maybe even the only) manufacturer who puts em on standard.
It's only "unsafe" to wheel without em if you can't manage not to poke to holes in stuff while they are off. Driving on the street it's not an issue at all.

i don't see what the factory skid plates were good for, at least on my trucks. on the IFS one, maybe for aerodynamic purposes?
on the straight axle truck, it's just a waste of time. i ditched that greasy, heavy piece of junk years ago. the only thing i could see it protecting is the front of the oil pan, but even then the rear hangs down in a more vulnerable spot.

Well, the gas tank skid plates are a pretty good idea...
I too ditched the one under the engine. Never gave me moment's trouble.
The cute little one under the transmission crossmember is certainly good protection...
(insert tongue-in-cheek icon here.)
