I have a rust spot on the bottom of my drivers door. It isn't much bigger than a nickle. I was wondering if anybody could tell me the best way to stop the rust untill I get my paint job. The rust is not throught the metal but I don't think it will be much longer before it get that far.

from what a friend(shop owner) tells me, you scrape the rust off by using a small screwdriver and also take out the paint that easily chips away then cover it up with touchup paint. That stops the rust from spreading.

I'm doing a little of this myself...

Cut some sandpaper down to 1/2 squares (maybe even a little smaller). You may want to be prepared with a couple different grits.

Get a bunch of pencils WITH erasers on one end.

Lightly glue the sandpaper squares to the erasers and roll the pencil back and forth between your fingers while pressing the eraser (sandpaper) against the rust spot.

This works great and minimizes an additional damage you might do by scrapping at it, but it might take a while if the rust is deep.

Use a rust converter and primer before putting touch up paint back on top. If you paint over 'live' rust you'll just make it spread faster.

I believe muriatic acid will dissolve the rust. Should be available in the autobody section of any parts store. Just make sure to rinse it off with water before shooting primer and paint.

Rust converter - products like Extend, POR15, etc - deoxidizes any left over rust to help keep it from spreading.
Note: when you think you've gotten all of the rust off, keep going. If you buy any under a rust converter or paint, it will only get worse. You'll know if you've missed any a year from now when blisters start forming under the paint near the repaired area.
