Roof Rack for 1st gen 4runner?

Hello all
Who still makes a decent (safari type) roof rack for the 1st gen 4runners? And where's the best place to get one?
Thanks!
Cheers
Chris

The problem with the 1st gen (and I'm sure you know this) is that the rear shell is fiberglass. Not that it can't be done, but the factory gutters are not as strong as they should be for a rack. I had a Thule gutter rack on mine for a few years and the gutters would fracture.

There are pics from a link in the above post.

To see what can be done to this type of rack, check the Tech section.

What about drilling into the top itself and connecting all the mounting bolts with an angle iron frame to spread the load?

i have a yakima load warrier with the extension on mine. yakima and thule make small 3inch bolt-on fake steel rain gutters. you just bolt them to the fiberglass top and they work like a regular rain gutter. i've had a 31" tire, two 5 gal jerry cans, and two bikes on my rack for a couple of 400+ mile on and off road trips and it never caused any problems.
