Question Roof basket/carriers

Hi Folks,

I am going to buy a roof basket/carrier for my 3rd gen. Something like the 40" x 50" Surco rack. Its gonna be used to mount 4 driving lights and carry a jerry can, but no heavy duty stuff.

Can any of you guys give me advice on what type to get, is the Surco good, I know its light weight but its not gonna get abused.
Any other makes you know off.
BTW its gonna cost me $100 to ship it to Ireland from JC Whitney so anyone know where I can get one cheap!!!

Cheers

For light duty use like you're talking about, the Surco is a good option. I have one that has held up reasonbly well, though I've put it through plenty of wear it was designed to see. For a gas can, spare tire, and a few lights, the Surco will be fine. And considering its price, it sounds like the right choice for you.

Just looking through your site, very nice rig....
Yeah I'm thinking the Surco is gonna be the best option, just wanted a few opinions.
I am gonna use the factory rails with the Surco CH100 mounting kit.
Are they up to it??

I just bought a brand new(still in Yakima packaging and shrinkwrap) Yakima Load Warrior on eBay for less than $200, shipping was $25. Not too sure what it would cost to ship to Ireland.

For what you're talking about doing, I'd say the factory rails will be fine.

I'm voting with Jackson, I was talking to Good Times, I think. He said they have a max weight of 75lbs, I don't know what that is in Ireland, but it's pretty good (j/k 165 kg)

I also have the Yak Rack, fyi

The surco will carry a lot more than 75lbs if it has proper support under it from the cross bars.

CMAR,

You may also want to look at the Thule Lappland 719 or 720. They should be available to you in England.

I have the Lappland 719 and it works very well and I like the look.

Hmmmm,
That Thule basket looks nice Woody. Nice and low to the roof as well. I suppose the reason I like the Surco is the lightweight and the kinda "rugged" look :-) But I will look into the Thule option.

Thats what I want Guys, loads of options before I decide...

What I have been thinking the last few days is getting one custom made in aluminum. I have a mate who works in a metal work shop and he could knock up something real easy. I must speak to him..... (he fitted my new A-bar)
