just saw in this month's r/t a letter regarding the failure of a mass airflow sensor in a nissan maxima, attributed (by the owner) to over oiling a k+n filter. this is apparently easy to do as it takes hours for the oil to migrate throughout the gauze so folks use too much to quickly finish the job. just thought i'd mention it for those that aren't aware.

yep, be careful how much oil you use on your K&N. the only first hand experience i have with this was on a GM pickup (wasn't mine, just came in to the shop) where the MAF was caked in oil and dirt. i was able to clean the sensor and it worked much better.

I had a K&N filter on my Runner. I just tossed it for a fram filter. I will never buy another K&N again.

I have had this happen on my mustang. The oil gets on the wire of the mass airflow sensor and the car start running really rich and idles like crap. Its a pretty common subject on mustang and camaro forums. You can just clean the mass airflow sensor. I have never heard of anybody having to buy a new one.

I bet he had a trouble code that said "mass airflow sensor failure" so he assumed it was bad and bought a new one. He could have just cleaned it.

hmm i dont have a MAF but...ive checked past my k&n filter and it has always worked well...

and i only paid $10 for it

Im not saying there is anything wrong with a K&N. But if you over oil it it will present a problem on MAF vehicles. This is not K&N's fault.
