im doint the thermostat right now.... guess what, i figure mine was bad... well i go to open it up to replace... there is none there! anyways, im about to put the new one back in... there is the check ball dangly thing.... where does it go? or does it not matter? it doesnt appear that the tstat fits in any particular way other than spring side down...... any ideas on this? i need to head off to work within the hour!

I don't know if yours is the same as mine, but mine came with that valve thing down, around 5 o'clock. The t-stat's middle was pretty straight up and down. Try that. By the way, how the hell did you not have a t-stat?!!!! How was your car's temp guage during that time? Holy ˟˟˟˟˟.

nope no tstat in there..... my truck is an 85 22r so there is no way our trucks are the same..... there doesnt seem t obe a middle on my tstat..... roger brown has a p ic identical to the one i have... let me find the pic

ok good... its all done and been running like 20 minutes now..... the guage is now about half and the level seems about right... the reservoir is about 50% full still giving enough to bleed off or into the system..... taking coolant with me to add later if i need it.... time to shower and get dressed... i have 40 mi9nutes before i have to be there

looked at it a few mintues ago before the shower and was a lot higher but still ok at about 3/4.... im guessing because it was parked... as soon as i blipped the throttle, it would go down a bit..... so im guessing that actually driving will help out a lot..... maybe time for some electric fans

Look at the reservoir, you may need some more antifreeze. Just add it to the tank.

level was great actually.... through some testing today, i let a coworker drive it on a tire run, he said it rasied up hotter than half almost to the red zone after he had been out on the road awhile..... so at least i have a songle stage thermostat in their now.... i guess next project is trying to find out why its still getting hot.... maybe the fan clutch.... also my timing is advanced because it runs better that way, but i wonder if it is too lean......

i wouldn't think timing would have much of an effect, you kind of have it backwards, retarded timing will raise the temp because the cylinder wall is exposed to more of the flame front, thus transferring more heat to the water

ah ok.. i was thinking hotter because if its running lean and advanced, would seem to make more power, and if that is the case, im sure i am abusing the powerband more...

What temperature t-stat did you put in?? I had a 195* in my 22r and it ran at about half the temp gauge, now with a 180* it runs at about 1/4 to 1/2, and when its down around a 1/4 it runs with a little more power.

Also, have you checked your fluid level by opening up the raidiator cap while its at operating temp? You should see fluid all the way over the top of the fins. If mine is lower than the fins, it runs hotter than normal.

fluid level is fine..... its over the fins and there is extra left in the reservoir to be added to or removed if the system needs it

Was it overheating before you installed the t-stat ?

Could it be air in the system? Turn on the heat, or open up the vent with the airconditioning on hot while you drive. They say that "purges the system" whatever that's supposed to mean. It's in a write up here at yotatech. Mine did the same thing as yours, and like a dumb a** I opened up the radiator and it exploded. I got out of the way and after everything was done, I put in new antifreeze and it's fine now. Funny thing is before that, when I had the heat on, it wasn't hot and the care was at operating temp. Just check it out, might be the problem.

no air is in the system, it was purged, and it was getting hot even befoeri did the stat, thats why i decided to replace it anyways, and the fact it was leaking coolant from the waterneck, but duh, there was no gasket in there because of no tstat
