Replacing shocks

Hey guys, Im thinking of replacing my stock shocks to some kybs or tokicos...i only drive in the city/highway, no offroading whatsoever. I was wondering what shocks should i get for that smooth ride and also this 4runner is my first SUV, how do you replace the shocks? I didn't see any strut towers in the back nor the front.

also i was on ebay looking for shocks, but they all say for 4wd, i have a 2wd, does it matter?

What year/model do you have?
Regardless of model , shocks are very easy to replace... just takes a little time (2 hours or so) when you are by yourself. Get a free srping compressor from autozone and go at it. You can score some Tokico Trek Masters off ebay for $200 shipped!

If your just gonna go with regualr shocks then just go OEM and save money plus I think OEM shocks are Tokicos. You can get a full set of OEM shocks and coils for around $350.
You want some lift then do a search since there's plenty of info out there but the two most popular choices are Bilstiens and OME setups.

It does matter if you want to keep the same height you have and you don't want to replace your 2WD springs. The 2WD shocks up front are shorter than the rears, at least for the 3rd gen. OEM shocks are only about $30 each and they are made by Tokico. If you have a 3rd gen, you only have the strut assembly in the front and in the rears, the springs and shocks are separate.

ahh i see, so no need to go from inside the car or the hood to replace the shocks correct? Well Im not really happy with the performance of the stock shocks, I live in Los Angeles, so I would like something softer if possible. I dont mind switching out springs also. The 4runner rides too much of a truck in my opinion. by the way I have a 2000 4runner limited.

That truck ride you don't like won't change a ton because the 4runner is a truck. What I mean, is that it sits on a truck platform.

Other SUV's like the Saturn Vue, Rav4, Honda CRV, etc. sit on car platforms and pretty much ride like cars. At TR4.org, some guy said that he went back to OEM after trying Trekmasters, Bilsteins and KYBs because OEMs had the best ride. IMHO, you're probably out of luck.

BTW, I live in L.A. and I know what you mean. The roads are pretty rough for a city and there are a ton of potholes and uneven pavement. Some advice, just go with the bounce...
