Replacing rotors

how hard is it to replace the rotors of a 95 4runner? mine are warped beyond recognition and i figured i'll just replace them.

how hard is it to do with a basic set of tools?

It isn't too bad, but you need a pretty decent set of tools. I believe there is a write-up on here for it. If not, let me know, and I'll get into the specifics.

just found this writeup http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runne...enance/brakes/ it looks like you just pull them off once you remove the caliper

How hard? All depends on how many bolts are rusted, how many will be a PITA to take out, how many would break off, and how many would want to re-drill and tap

They come off pretty easy.
Quick hit with a deadblow mallet helps the process.

Not quite that easy fellas....

2nd Gen and 3rd Gen have different rotor setups. Ours are bolted to the hubs, so they require quite a bit more work to remove and replace.

Don't forget to buy the 54mm socket before you start working on it.

Repack wheel bearings while you're there.

I'm not familiar with your model, but in most cases a fish scale may be used to set the preload on the wheel bearings. These can be purchased at Wal-Mart or sporting goods stores. You pull with it once you've tightened the wheel bearing to where you think it should be. If the reload calls for 3 lbs., the wheel should start to move once you've applied enough pressure to get it to 3 lbs. on the scale. This test is done with the caliper removed.

This approach helps to ensure that you do not over-tighten the wheel bearings.

I just followed the instructions on 4x4wire and haven't had a problem yet. You will need the 54mm or 2 1/8" socket and a torque wrench to do the job. Also use some PB Blaster. A quick tip, mount the rotor and hub to the wheel when you try to seperate the two. You should also get two new grease seals. They are kinda a PITA to remove but you can do it with a flathead and a hammer. Just BE CAREFUL.

I have a long post somewhere around here about it.

Check out these threads.
