jim, my rear disc set up is the kit from all pro offroad. i did loose my parking brake, but i live in florida. i am researching options for a different caliper that i can modify to work with my parking brake. the kit cost around 500$ my drums were dead and i had lifted my truck and put larger heavier tires on it. i immediately noticed that i stopped quicker and let me tell you how nice it is to actually be able to clean my brakes after an offroad trip! if you want more info just ask and ill answer away.

you mean in this picture?
if so, that is bearing grease (im assuming you knew that) and its only on the exterior of the seal with gear oil lubing the inside. but just to increase my knowledge, why would grease be a bad thing? or is it just the grease mixing with the gear oil? im more concerned with the metal shavings i found in my axle housing and by the inner axle seal.
do you think i should go in and clean the grease off the exterior of the seal before i drive it too much? if so, please explain why. thanks

I believe it is the leading to another leak if the inner diameter is soaked w/ grease. Another word, its gives a path for fluid to move through.
The reason why I say that is because i had bad luck w/ front-side engine seals on my two camry and failed after less than half of yr. After that I stop greasing the inner diameter and it seems fine now for over 4-5months.
maybe its just a coincidence but thats how i think it should be done.

i know service manuals tell you to do so, thats what i followed back-then but now i stop. i just put a slight motor oil around the shaft (cam, crank, or axle for this matter) just to give enough lube when driving in, but no grease on the inner dia seal.
i odnt know, thats just my way after certain trial and error

Either motor oil or grease should work fine, but grease does last longer if for some reason the seal doesn't get proper lubrication. I would assume that is why the FSM calls for MP grease. This is similar to engine rebuilding where you use grease on all the metal to metal surfaces to prevent damage before the parts do their initial break-in.

Have a similar problem
Hello All,
First of all thank you for all the helpful posts!!!!
My problem......I have a 1997 2wd 4Runner. I noticed that my rear wheel tire has oil all over the brake shield, but not on the tire itself like one of the images.....what are my options?? I got two quotes...one guy is asking for $600 and another $250, which are worlds apart....from my understanding its an axle seal problem......a mechanic close to my work said he could do it for $250, but is it an easy job?? I hope he doesn't screw it up!!! Please advise
