So I guess you had the air bags blow, did the seat belts blow too? Were either of the sensors up front damaged at all?

The drivers side sensor on my 01 Tacoma looked like this:

I replaced it because the old one looked damaged. I also replaced the main air bag control box behind the center console, both air bags, and both seat belt retractors.

You should have 2 sensors in the front with yellow tape around it. Also dealing with airbag stuff you should always buy it new.

do the 3rd gens not have passenger airbags? i figured if one airbag blew...then the other one should blow too right?

that's how it was in my wreck? lol and all other wrecks i've seen no matter what happened.

should just replace anything that doesn't work? there should only be two sensors up front....so check em, and replace if needed? (if you can check them, which i'm sure you can.)

Off Topic, how bad was the wreck?

the pass side didn't go. i believe the seats have sensors in them to say if there is a passenger or not so thats why i think it didn't blow. i was not in the wreck i bought the thing for like 250 and fixed it. i just found out its not a salvage title! but the insurance payed him? ill post some pics

Not sure if there is a way to check the crash sensors, mine (2001 Taco) was slightly damaged (in the crumple zone) so I replaced it. Afterward I cut it open to look at it and it looked like it was still operable. It was a simple inertia switch, heavily protected. Probably would have still worked. I didn't replace the other crash sensor and it was fine (no codes thrown).

I read in my research that the main airbag computer should be replaced anytime the bag blows, but I don't know how accurate the info was. I found a bone yard that had everything but the crash sensors for sale so I bought and replaced everything I mentioned in my first post.

I took a look in my FSM. It is not crystal clear, but it appears to require that in any deployment on either side, that both front sensors, the airbag sensor assembly (the box in the center console) and the airbag assembly and the seatbelt pre-tensioner that deployed be replaced. There is another squib in the belt mechanism that should have fired so this last makes sense. I can't imagine that it did not fire if the bag on that side deployed.

I saw nothing about an airbag computer, unless that is the same as the airbag sensor assembly in the center console.

And yeah, they want you to buy new--used sensors, etc. is a no-no. I have no experience with this, I'm just reading what Toyota says in the FSM.

...
Yeah I forgot what they call it, that little box in the center console. #6 here:
http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/...rsair/oper.pdf

6. AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY
The airbag sensor assembly is mounted on the floor inside the
center cluster. The airbag sensor assembly consists of airbag
sensor, safing sensor, diagnosis circuit, ignition control and
drive circuit, etc.
It receives signals from the airbag sensor assembly and judges
whether the SRS must be activated or not.
Its hard to get a straight answer on what should be replaced because any official info is going to be ultra conservative on the side of caution due to the life and death matter of its function. BTW I sold that 2001 Taco and my 93 truck doesn't even have airbags LOL.

You still haven't found those crash sensors? I don't know what they meant by members. They are inside the inter fender above the frame. Only thing under the hood with a huge yellow wiring harness.
