Record breaking mileage on my 3rd gen
After just driving my 3rd gen to and from work for 2 weeks, I managed to get a whopping 28 MPG on my AUTO 3.4 . Yes, I said 28 MPG! Thats quite amazing considering I drive the truck everyday BELOW 2300 RPM. I heard driving at around the 2000-2300 RPM range can yeild excellent gas mileage results, I geuss thats a true fact.
P.S. : My 3rd gen is all stock; no tires, gears, or lifts.....yet. Just cheap performance mods.

i can def. see that driving that conservativly can get you 28 mpg... i get about 24 highway (65%) city (35%) on premium gas and i try not to drive with a lead foot....

24??? 28??? is this like a joke lol?? I have NEVER gotten better than 19.1 with two different 4runners.. i average about 17mpg with 50-70% highway driving

I think you carried too many 1's over... it should be 18 not 28 
I never drive above 2300 RPMs either... I usually get about 13-16 MPG

Lifts, and bigger, heavier tires, adversely affect mileage.
I routinely get 22 mpg cruising around town, highway mileage is better. How much better depends on how fast I go. It seems like speeds above 65 mph really start to bring down the mpg.
'97 4Runner, 5 speed, V6, 4x4, Dynomax Ultraflow muffler, my own version of the modded airbox, K&N air filter, NGK Iridium plugs, Mobil 1 synthetic oils in everything, including synthetic grease in the U-joints, slip-joints, and Double-cardon joints.
LT 265/75R16 C Toyo Open Country A/T's. These tires hurt mileage a bit, vs the stock P265/70R16'S, even taking into account the difference in circumference. But the tradeoff is worthwhile to me.

I don't believe it. I have a completely stock 123k engine with a new o2 sensor and I can barely hold 14mpg. Now, I believe something is wrong w/ my engine, but getting twice as much?

I don't think that that is possible. The best I've ever gotten was 24 and that was on stock tires, with my wife driving. I don't think that 28 is possible unles you have the supercharger and several other mods to help out your gas milage.

It seems a bit high to me, but I am sure it is possible, it all depends on where he is driving. Before I moved I lived right near the highway, so I pretty much got straight on and got off at work, I got decent gas mileage, then I moved and now have about 10-15 minutes of basically coasting in 5th gear around 45 mph and I noticed my gas mileage went way up!

my last tank, i grandma'd my way around... about 60% highway, 40% in city... and i got 18.something mpg. thats the best ive gotten in a while.
boston's driving is so erratic.. traffic everywhere, stop signs, lights, rotaries, etc... that i think its tough to keep a steady engine pace.

I live and work in the boonies and the best I can sustain is 21-22 mpg, including highway-boonies mix. If that's based on 1 fill-up, I wouldn't believe it. If he gets the same results after about 3 or 4 more fill-ups, well, maybe then I MIGHT believe it.
